If Germany wanted you in the Army, you were in the Army...go into Austria...hey all 17 and above males are now Nazis...conscripted in the Army...go into Czech, hey all 17 and above males are now Nazis in the German military.
The majority of defenders on D-day along the German "wall" in the West weren't even German.
In fact, they probably wouldn't have passed muster to be in the German Army back in 1939.
But Germany was desperate by 1944 as the elite units were all entangled on the Eastern front with the Russian invasion and retreat.
The only D-day beach that had a highly trained combat proven squad nearby (who were supposedly on vacation or R&R in the nearby town in France) was Omaha...which suffered the highest casualties on D-day by far...and for a lot of reasons...the beach was long to traverse open targets and then there were steep rocky cliffs to get over once they made it across the beach.
But a lot of the countries Germany defeated early on in the war, the men were put into the Army as they were now part of Germany.
And to your other point, the Nazis were really a small party that seized control and you had the brown shirts and SS...
But the majority by far of the German military machine were just regular Germans who "got drafted" so to speak.

Switching sides happened quite a bit in the war of northern agression. They even had a name for soldiers that switched from the south to the north. They were called galvanized Yankees. The soldiers that switched from north to south were just called right.

We changed the way we fight, because of our experience against the Wehrmacht in WW2.
German doctrine taught soldiers to seize the initiative and exploit openings - it pushed the power to make important decisions down to the lowest levels. As a consequence, they were very aggressive, and They inflicted lopsided casualties on everyone.

We should not name a Special Forces HQ after a person who volunteered to join the Waffen SS. Just plain wrong when you realize that the SS killed American soldiers during WWII and the SS was racially based. It wasn't just another unit. They were the units who were going to help bring about the Final Solution and create an Aryan homeland in Europe. You had to be Aryan or look Aryan to join the Waffen SS.
You also have to remember that during WWII we were allies with the Soviet Union so by killing members of the Red Army he was hurting our war effort.
You should not praising a guy who joined a specifically a racist unit like the SS who hurt our war effort. You are basically rooting against the US when you praise the guy and what he did during WWII.

Actually have been told it was quite the opposite.American soldiers weren't taught to improvise and seize the initiative prior to WWII?
It was one of the reasons for our success in Normandy.The planning and leadership were a complete clusterfrick.If not for our noncoms and boots on the ground plus air cover it could have been a much longer campaign or even worse.

You don't know shite about the Waffen-SS. The Waffen-SS were not the forces responsible for carrying out the Final Solution at all. It also consisted of foreign nationals from all across Europe and beyond.
Indians, Croats, Spaniards, French, Dutch, Hungarians, Ukrainians, etc. And even Russians.

Tell me the part they played. The Waffen-SS were combat forces. The principal purpose of the Waffen-SS was to be an elite fighting force. Their purpose and roll evolved over time and varied regarding the incorporation of foreign volunteers.

And? No one said they were all angels. They were a part of one of the most brutal and difficult conflicts in human history and were put in sitautions of extreme privation and disadvantage. I can point out atrocities committed by lots during the course of WWII. They were also frequently dealing with partisans.
Would you like to universally condemn the U.S. war effort in WWII because of our support of and affiliation with the USSR and the untold number of atrocites they committed? Or the atrocities and warcrimes committed by partisan forces that we directly supported? War is not morally black and white.
