Interesting article from the Smithsonian about the politics and greed of daylight savings time.

From a humor perspective, a fox news opinion piece by Michael Levin.

God, I despise daylight savings! So fricking retarded! You can't save time there's still 24 hours in a day.

To keep things uniform year-round we should consider simply STAYING on Daylight Savings Time.

This idea of DST for 8 months and Standard for only 4 months is disruptive and bizarre.

Now that I can get behind. Back when I was a kid I loved it because it meant more time to play outside, sports, etc.

Basically the same thing today actually.

Companies want their employees to be at work on time, darkness slows traffic down and increases accidents, making employees late for work.

They don't give a damn how long it takes for their employees to get home after work or that more accidents will occur as a result of it being dark. You're off the clock then.

That's a big reason for the time changes - to allow for a speedier morning commute and fewer late employees.

On Jan. 8, 1974, Richard Nixon forced Floridians and the entire nation into a year-round daylight saving – a vain attempt to stave off an energy crisis and lessen the impact of an OPEC oil embargo.

But before the end of the first month of daylight saving that January, eight children died in traffic accidents in Florida, and a spokesperson for Florida’s education department attributed six of those deaths directly to children going to school in darkness.

I think they should just split it in the middle by jumping forward 30 minutes and never change it again. If I ever run for POTUS that would be my #1 promise to stop this madness by adding 30 minutes and never having to add or subtract an hour ever again.

Depends on where you live. If you happen to live as I do at the begging of a new time zone DST is the best for year round

Yeah, your facts here completely contradict the poster's position that you addressed.

With DST, all will commute in the morning in darkness. Not a big deal if you live in Wash DC, NYC and other big cities where the much of the well-off commute to work on metro trains. THEY do OK in the dark, but, with DST, THEY have more daylight to enjoy life when they get home from work.

For almost all of the South, except for Atlanta, people commute in their cars, so the morning darkness is a big deal for them. DST does adversely affect the safety of their morning commute.

Now then, would the Powerbrokers in Wash DC compel a national policy that more greatly favors the North than it would the South? I don't know. Has that ever happened before in history?
