I have no idea what your background is, and maybe you're some kind of healthcare fraud savant. But most of the time a little bit of common sense and skepticism is what's missing.
Yeah. It wasn’t tough. It was four hospices with the same owner located in four separate offices in literally the same office complex. Three of the hospices were ultra small - 0-19 patients. The fourth had like 50 patients average census.
I would suspect their live discharge rate or the average length of time on service are red flags as well.

You'd think that the IRS should have gotten involved at some point in time.

Rereading the article, it’s ridiculous on its face.
California has warned hospice doctors that working for more than three hospices is a warning sign for fraud.
This doctor signed hospice certs for over 120 different hospices.

Almost any illness CAN be terminal. The more practical rule of thumb is that of having a life expectancy of 6 months or less. Sometimes true hospice patients live longer than six months, but one fraudulent hospice in CA had a 97% survival rate year after year, and this one did too. There is HUGE fraud in this area.
The money pot with Hospice care is that Medicare and Medicaid pay most if not all of the hospice services at 100% with no cost to the patient.
So I can see that it would be real easy to inflate some costs and add a few extra items here and there because the patient will reach room temperature soon, not much to go back on if the patient passes away or if he or she needed that extra bed or walker.
Part of it too is that when an emergency with the hospice patient comes up. Most of the time you have to call the agency before calling any ambulatory service that may add to the cost that the hospice agency cannot clawback funds for if they did not authorize it.

Hospices are paid a per diem rate for their patients. They don’t get extra money for extra items billed. It’s kind of what makes this fraud work. And it also leads one to believe that there’s some pharmacies and equipment companies in on the fraud.

The writing is on the wall and they've been absolute trash since they canned Herridge. Guess they've decided to revert to some actual journalism, at least on this subject.
