Should not pay for something you don’t use. IMO. There has to be a better way. Tax payers should be able to choose to a certain degree what they are paying for.

Will property transfers be subject to regular sales tax instead? Genuinely curious. I think that would be preferable.

Even worse is paying extra property tax because you have a "dwelling" on your property like a storage shed.
How does this work in rural areas and on acreage? I had a $17k Tuff Shed built on 25 acres last March. My property taxes went up to like 100 bucks (from 70ish). It's about all that is there minus a lean to that I built for the shooting range, a 20' high cube shipping container, and 10 loads of gravel.
They don't send assessors to walk through people's land, right? They wouldn't even be able to find the shed unless they were flying a drone. My understanding is that no building permits were filed because it's unnecessary in that area.
So do they know about the shed some other way? Or did taxes just go up for funzies?

Property taxes pay for public schools, local government services like police and fire departments, roads etc
Local government has never done anything for me but give me hassle and take my money
No thug culcha where I live and the meth heads know alligators gonna eat if they get caught stealing. I could also do without the occcasional bs ticket
Never called a fire dept in my life
Most non state roads are for shite and the state roads aren’t much better
Next question

So you want to wait until you actually need fire, police, emergency medical assistance before building the local roads to your home. I think that would work well for the rest of us but it is going to end badly for you.

before building the local roads to your home

Which party is paying the tax the renter or the owner? You can’t have it both ways, one of the two is not paying taxes. On paper the owner pays the tax. The renter should have skin in the game to help pay for govt services they use.
The renter pays the taxes unless the owner is an idiot.
This is common sense for everyone who isn’t an….well…idiot.

well simple you should move to a state where they don't have property taxes, good luck finding one! for what it's worth jethro, every state i've lived in that had low income taxes had sky high property taxes. texas being a prime example.

I don't at all disagree with the idea of abolishing property taxes.
But I am going to play the devil's advocate for a moment...
States certainly are not required by federal law to collect property taxes.
If Ron Desantis is so strongly in favor of abolishing property taxes, he could lead the way by abolishing them in Florida.
The Republicans have a supermajority in the Florida House, 87-32. They have a supermajority in the Senate, 26-10.
If he really believes in this, he needs to go ahead and do it in Florida, where the Republicans dominate the state house. If he can't do it in Florida, he won't be able to do it on the national level.
It will also give him the opportunity to demonstrate how he will deal with the loss of tax revenue...either by increasing revenue in other areas, or cutting spending.

If Ron made this his primary domestic issue in 4 years...
He's been Governor of Florida for six and a half years. Why hasn't he already done it in Florida, where he has supermajorities in both Houses?

It's truly mindboggling that some people can't grasp that renters are actually inadvertently paying the property fax themselves.
Any landlord who hasn't built into the rent the cost of property taxes, property insurance, repairs, maintenance, pest control, etc, etc, etc, is an utterly incompetent landlord.

Which is why property taxes are the fairest taxes that result in the most people with skin in the game.
Property tax should be the last tax abolished.
Income and sales/use taxes are leftist tax schemes.

That swoosh you heard was my point going over your head. Only one tax is getting paid per property. Yes any property owner should wrap those costs into the monthly rent or they are losing money. Both the renter and the owner can’t lay claim to paying the taxes. Only the owner can claim that honor. So the claim that renters pay property taxes tax is stupid, they pay rent, the owner pays the taxes.
