My guess.
They always knew where he was. And Iranians knew he was in an area but not specifically.
So we pretend to make a rescue and draw enemies out and shellack them.
Meanwhile we rescue the CWO at the real location with no enemies around because they were drawn to wrong location.
Reporting is slow because they need to wait until all teams are out and family notified.

They have no clue what is going on.
