Take a short term hit with the shooting but then come out with painting the shooter as a disgruntled conservative......kinda like the "your own people are not happy with you" narrative.

At that point, half the country would suddenly believe that the actual government did this. It’s too obvious that it would be a government plot then. It being a “conservative” would tear the country apart.
