I live and work in NYC (unfortunately) and working on trying to leave.
Anyone telling you the city is no different is either lying or willfully ignorant.
I work in the downtown area. In our building, our company is the only one on our floor, the other tenants moved out. Probably half the building is now empty and has been for about 2 years.
The building next to us had a ground floor open lobby with lunch tables where employees in the area could go to eat lunch or have a quick break. There were stores like Starbucks and some other cafe type stores as well.
Stores are closed. I hadn't gone in for some weeks, when I went in to the lobby on my lunch break to eat my food recently it was full of illegal immigrants and homeless.
There were several tables where they were playing cards and gambling.
They're supposedly in need of hand outs but have money to gamble, go figure.
Fights or altercations occur on the subway at least once a week. To be fair, they happened even before Covid and all this mess but much more spread out.
They just implemented another toll in Manhattan.
They run commercials and PSA's begging people to come back to the city while doing everything they can to make it unappealing.

NYC has an economy of roughly $ 2.1 TRILLION and close to 24 million, how can a few 1000 migrants upset the apple cart enough to bring the city to it's knees?
