The Alaska Natives Group is very powerful in Alaska and they are vehemently opposed to Kav because of some of his rulings which they feel erode tribal rights.

Just trying to give some perspective on this. The Natives Group have played a huge role in helping get Murkowski elected and she is under a great deal of heat from them.

Why is Dan Sullivan immune to this pressure?

Native community stood behind her in 2010 when she lost her primary and was able to win the general on a write in. I think she hasn't forgotten that.

Her whole state is going to be under a frick ton more pressure if she pisses off Cocaine Mitch and Trump.

Those same tribes urging her to vote no must really not remember that their rights are governed by Congress and enforced by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Wouldn't be entirely unsurprising if the staffing level for the Alaskan Natives Division suddenly dipped to non-existant.

Because they don't vote for Dan and never will. Natives come out in droves for Murkowski

Then she needs to switch to a "D" beside her name... She acts like one anyway, so The Alaska Natives Group would probably still support her...

Yet the Dems in conservative states don't bow to pressure.

My guess this is a play behind the scenes to get the Natives some concession, that Trump/Mitch will promise to her and them.

If true, then wouldn't it be her obligation to listen to her constituents and vote against? Conversely, the Dems that have the majority of their constituents wanting to confirm, it would be their obligation to vote yes.

It won't because Alaska Native relations isn't defined entirely by BIA legislation.

That is primarily controlled through ANILCA and ANSCA laws.

It's hard to understand but Alaska isn't "Indian" Country.

In general, a group of people who weren't going to vote for a politician anyway aren't in a particularly good position to pressure that politician. Hopefully Murky is wise enough to realize this. She's a swampmonster and may use this as an excuse to case a No vote however.

Only to ensure that a more conservative Tea Party candidate wouldn't win the election. With the GOP threat in that state effectively neutralized, they'll go back to voting D.

My guess is she told Cocaine Mitch she'd vote aye to get to fifty if it were necessary, but she wanted to protect her seat otherwise. That's how this shite works - making sausage.

TRUMP handily won Alaska in 2016, is she sure she wants to run against him in her reelection efforts?

Aren't ANILCA and ANCSA primarily land laws? I thought the BIA handled all "tribal" relations issues.

I could be wrong, but I didn't think the lands acts applied to tribal/governmental relations on issues not related to land.

ETA, from the BIA's "About Us" page:

quote:

Indian Affairs (IA) is the oldest bureau of the United States Department of the Interior. Established in 1824, IA currently provides services (directly or through contracts, grants, or compacts) to approximately 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. There are 573 federally recognized American Indian tribes and Alaska Natives in the United States. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) is responsible for the administration and management of 55 million surface acres and 57 million acres of subsurface minerals estates held in trust by the United States for American Indian, Indian tribes, and Alaska Natives. Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) provides education services to approximately 42,000 Indian students. BIA and BIE’s missions are:

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) mission is to: "… enhance the quality of life, to promote economic opportunity, and to carry out the responsibility to protect and improve the trust assets of American Indians, Indian tribes, and Alaska Natives."

The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) mission is to: "… provide quality education opportunities from early childhood through life in accordance with the tribes’ needs to cultural and economic well being in keeping with the wide diversity of Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages as distinct cultural and governmental entities. The Bureau considers the whole person (spiritual, mental, physical and cultural aspects.)"

Murkowski should be more loyal to real Americans, and not to some immigrant group!
