NOLA White Privilege Example

Today, I had to meet a contractor who owed me money. The contractor is black and I'm white. We do quite a bit of work with each other and to not put him out, I agreed to meet him near a job site located on Felicity Street, near Claiborne Avenue.
While I was parked on the street for 20 minutes, NOPD drove by four or five times. When the contractor arrived, he pulled up to the front of my car and parked on the wrong side of the street.
His work truck is white with tinted window and brand new. Now, NOPD passed us up, did an immediate U turn and parked to see what the hell was going on with this white truck and white man.
My black contractor friend mentioned that the NOPD probably thought it was a drug deal, which for that area would not be a stretch to imagine. I told him I'd take care of it.
I then walked to the front of the truck so that the NOPD officer could see me, I waved that I was OK, and he left.
This same event takes place in cities across America every day. Nothing out of the ordinary.
In a crime ridden city like New Orleans, as a white businessman, I know the police will not question me without a very good reason. My friend, on the other hand, knows all too well what being profiled is like.
I joked with the contractor about my ability to wave off NOPD simply by showing my middle aged white face. His son, watching the whole thing didn't look very comfortable with the NOPD scrutiny his dad was getting. Institutional white privilege is real. What happens when someone like me isn't there to simply wave away profiled attention?
My contractor friend's brother was shot and killed less than 6 months ago for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. No big deal, just another dead person in NOLA. No news coverage, no public outrage. Just a normal thing in the black community.
Something has to change.

Could be. Probably not though but that's not what this was

If black males, who are 6% of the population, would stop committing half the murders that would be a good start.

You are a hero for saving that brother baw.

Why are you meeting a contractor in person to settle money? Under the table?

One culture has promoted or "owned" a negative stereotype of being criminals. People believed it.
The other has not done this.
Cops don't treat Asians as a threat and they make all those kung fu movies.
It is what it is. It's not right. But the stereotypes won't change until the culture changes.

Something has to change because a cop became interested in determining if it was a drug deal (something both you and the other guy admitted it looked like)?

You come up with a better system, let me know.
It's smart to play the odds.

The statues are gone, get over it.

Sounds like you were flashing your white privilege around by confronting the NOPD and telling them this black man was okay.

Funny, I do this a lot with my subs when I'm paying them on Fridays. It happens a lot, you're right. A lot of times with State Troopers.
But you see, Im white.

You figured that one out already.

I always meet this guy in person. He usually comes to me. Face to face allows us to discuss upcoming jobs. He makes money, I make money, everybody's happy.

All I got out of the officer's curiosity was
quote:

When you walk through the woods do you get nervous when you see a snake? How about a dragonfly?
Tell your friend we are sorry that it is impossible to change human nature in which millions of years of evolution has conditioned us to fear known sources of danger.
Believe it or not, solving the problem of black on black crime is easier than trying to change millions of years of evolution.

You wonder why the NOPD stopped to check it out?
I could park sideways in the street. As long as I am dressed properly, I'd be asked to kindly move, nothing more.
The point of my post was to simply shed a bit of light onto a problem that affects others. Many people have never felt the glare of the police. I know I haven't.
