Puerto Rico's new governor was sworn in Monday as the U.S. territory prepares for what many believe will be new austerity measures and a renewed push for statehood to haul the island out of a deep economic crisis. Gov. Ricardo Rossello, 37, proposed several measures aimed at alleviating the crisis shortly after he was sworn in at midnight. Among them is a proposal to hold a referendum that would ask voters whether they prefer statehood or independence. Many have argued that Puerto Rico's political status has contributed to its decade-long crisis that has prompted more than 200,000 people to flee to the U.S. mainland in recent years.

Not a fan of this at all.

We should make them, and a South American territory a state. Let them be a buffer for the main land.

What what change?

I don't know what benefits they would get. Are they eligible for Social Security, Obamacare, Welfare, etc?

You know, I was just thinking the US needed to take on another group of deadbeats. Are we running short on sugar cane, rum, or baseball players?

50 is such a nice round number. The OCD in me is heavily against having 51 states.

We really should set PR free. Let them govern themselves 100%. Adios.

Hell no! That would mean two new Deomcrat Senators. It would be a disaster if that happened.

Puerto Rican's will never support it because they are never going to pay Federal Income taxes. As it stands now, they get a free ride.

What benefit would the US get? I can't think of any. Anyway, Congress would have to approve and I don't see a Republican Congress letting them in.

Ground work is already being done.

A New York paper reprinted an article yesterday from 1977 regarding Gerald Ford (POTUS, not Rex) wanting to make PR a state.

We should let them become their own country and cut out all the welfare we spend there.

They pay no income tax but get all the food stamps ect.

It is their own mismanagement and corruption that has them broke.

Having visited Puerto Rico in the past couple years, I am strongly against this.

It is a beautiful island though. No reason they should not have Hawaii level tourism and I actually have no problem with marketing tourism there. Its a $350 flight from MSY. We stayed at a Waldorf Astoria where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean. It was breathtaking.

But they hate Americans. They love American taxpayers though.

Around 6 billion dollar spending cut if we dump them. Seems like a great idea, they bring nothing to the table othe than a Caribbean destination that doesn't require a passport. I'm willing to accept that inconvenience.

Unfortunately, Puerto Ricans want to be a state and not independent. There are more Puerto Ricans who live on the mainland (primarily NYC) than in Puerto Rico. And I certainly don't see the U.S. authorizing statehood for Puerto Rico given the fact that Republicans control Congress and the Presidency.
