SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a red-flag gun bill Tuesday that will allow state district courts to order the temporary surrender of firearms, and she urged sheriffs to resign if they still refuse to enforce it.

quote:

New Mexico Sheriffs' Association President Tony Mace of Cibola County said the new law goes too far by potentially impounding guns before any crime is committed and that he and other sheriffs will assert their discretion over its enforcement.

quote:

Lujan Grisham said sheriffs should have the opportunity to oppose any proposed policy change, but “they cannot not enforce." “If they really intend to do that, they should resign as a law enforcement officer and leader in that community,” she said.

I think if I were one of those sheriffs, I’d urge her to resign if she refuses to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights.

I blame our education system.
We apparently never taught the meaning of the phrase, "shall not infringe".

How has trying to compel law enforcement to break 2A worked out in Virginia?

Do the NM sheriffs have the ability to seize and auction property based on unpaid taxes?

Sounds like a good time to dig through pols’ tax records.

Welp, they dont work for her so the can take a flying frick at a rolling pickle for all they care.

Since states are now free to restrict rights no one should have a problem with lil ole Mississippi backsliding on the 13th a bit.

The price of yardwork is just too damn high.

I don’t know.

What I do know is that sheriffs aren’t accountable to governors within their own jurisdictions.

Yep, there's only so many officers, cells, hours in the day. Spitting on the sidewalk enforcement about to take more time from officers so then their ability to confiscate firearms will suffer.

In other news, many New Mexico sheriffs urge Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to "Shut her dick holster."

What's she going to do, send in the guard? The sheriff's departments can just cordon the armory and not allow any guardsmen in.

Another state where law enforcement opposing a gun control law that was sold as a crime prevention tool where its supporters actually believe it will work but law enforcement is saying hell no.

I'm no detective and I don't have a friend named Watson but by using simple logic and reasoning I'm going to call that a clue. It will not only fail but infringes on a constitutional right.

Pull her over every time she goes 1 mph over the speed limit. After all, officers shouldn’t use discretion. The law is the law.

It will come down to turnout.

NM state legislature passed red flag laws and threatened for the second year in a row to ban fracking.

Lots of pissed off old timers, ranchers, hunters, and people on the oil field communities. Anglos and Hispanics, old and young.

I've had many conversations with 50+ year old Hispanics, lifelong Democrats, who think Santa Fe has gone off the deep end and praise Trump.

I suspect there will be record turnout outside of ABQ, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces.

And lots of registered Dems voting for Trump.

And no hometown stoner Gary Johnson to siphon off votes.

NM is definitely in play, but it isn't a lock.
