And there is a big difference in benevolent authoritarian and destructive authoritarian.
The Japanese have traditionally hated communists. And communists are one of the premier examples of a destructive style of authoritarianism.

It doesn’t take much of a counter argument to say that being compliant and disciplined isn’t even remotely the same thing as sympathetic to authoritarianism. Nor does it to say Trump isn’t authoritarian.

Japanese seem very civilized to me.
And civilization requires laws and an authority to enforce them.
We have retreated from the authority and responsibility to enforce civilization. We have young women stabbed to death on trains and repeat offenders causing all kinds of crime and mayhem. Japan doesn't tolerate that.
