I know the US is required to defend other NATO countries if attacked. Are they also required to defend us?

What would NATO do if the US attacks NK and Russia and/or China intervene on NK's behalf?

I would hope whatever we ask of them.

We have been a good ally with our fellow NATO members, I would think they would return that in kind.

Yes. They came to our aid in Afghanistan following 9/11 attacks.

They're not compelled to attack countries we choose to attack. For example, France was critical and didn't participate in the invasion of Iraq in '03.

Some countries, like Poland and the Baltic States, would do all they could. Others not so much.

World is a much different place than 2001.

Don't forget, we also be asking our European partners in NATO to fight their energy supplier - Russia.

They joined us in Afghanistan and jumped head first into Iraq with us.

So there is your answer.

That's what a mutual defense treaty is by definition: all parties are required to come to the aid of the other if attacked. Interestingly, the only time Article 5 has ever been invoked was after the U.S. was attacked on Sept. 11.

I'm no expert on NATO, so I'm not sure about your hypo. Mutual defense may be limited to attacks on the homeland, so retaliation on our forces in NK may not be covered. Realistically though, even if it were theoretically covered, I doubt the EU would attack Russia or China if they were retaliating against a preemptive US invasion of NK, unless it escalated to WW3.

The only time Article 5 has been invoked in history was after 9/11...

As for your second scenario NATO is a defensive alliance, Article 5 doesn't come into play if someone attacks first.
