This does not surprise me. Several months ago, I was in Academy and saw this first hand. Three women and a young boy looking to purchase a fire arm. I provided a little input on size and handling of the weapons and also asked the curious question of why. Clear and simple response, they were scared of "thugs" and violence in the community in which they lived. I did ask them to look into classes on how to use their weapon and local shooting ranges, which they already said they had looked into this and signed up for classes. Take it for what its worth.
