Morehouse parish closing another 2 schools

quote:

Nothing could be determined until the Oct. 1 student count that the Louisiana Department of Education uses to determine Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) funds.
MFP is the financial amount the state determines districts and schools should receive per student, and it varies based on issues such as whether the child has special needs.

"The October count unfortunately proved to be what we expected," Gray said.
The district has 3,782 students, a loss of 144 students since February. Since 2014, the district has lost 747 students.

quote:

That's the point that the district determined that it would no longer have a cash surplus. The district took a $2 million loss last year, and now there's no more delaying or putting off a solution.
The shortfall is close to $1.7 million. The district will become financially insolvent in February if it doesn't take action midway through the year.

Gray is suggesting that the district close two schools and have a reduction in force of about 50 employees. The number of layoffs is not set in stone, and Gray said district policy requires that uncertified employees be released before certified ones.

I dont believe they didn't know. Your trying to tell me that you could not predict the fiscal year with solid data to determine you would be out of money by late 2018. Hogwash. Total incompetence.

Are areas like this the reason you all want vouchers? What I dont understand is how vouchers work in small country parishes/ counties. Those areas only have one school system. I can see how it would work in a larger city (Baton Rouge sized or larger).

You're still living under the misconception that you have to go to school to go to school.

Eh. Morehouse Parish is literally a shell of it’s former self. I get depressed going there, and there isn’t any money left there.

Vouchers wouldn’t work there, because there is nothing to entice people to invest in the community.

The irony is that the kids from the 2 closing schools are going to be bused to other schools that are underfunded.

This isnt going to solve the problem, only allow to them operate on declining income.

I don't want vouchers. Government money always comes with strings and poisons what it touches.

International Paper was the only thing keeping them afloat economically.

As for vouchers, what about Beauregard, Vernon, Sabine, etc.

Not exactly but close enough.

If they could go ahead and close Grambling, SUNO, Northwestern State, and maybe merge Tech and ULM that would be nice as well.

I agree with the "strings attached" argument. I guess the question is which us better of two evils.

Being forced to send your kids to mediocre to failing schools. OR having a charter option that has some federal oversight but has better teachers, etc.

I agree with your premise. The only political concern (outside the obvious ones of closing HBCUs) is that Natchitoches and Grambling would be effectively ghost towns without their Universities.

Lake Charles could survive without McNeese albeit it too would have a weaker economy because of it.

Any place that loses a university will take an economic hit, that goes without saying, the point is you are hurting the state as whole and the students themselves at those universities by keeping them open.

I don't. But some people are there for their jobs and the cheap housing.

Most charter schools in Louisiana are a joke. They are run more like a for profit college than an actual school.

Personal responsibility and family pride must be greater than the yearning for government dependence in order for anything positive to take root in these commmnities, black and white, no matter how much money you spend on these schools. It must start with the leaders in those community’s, particularly in the churches, or the cycle will continue to feed itself.
