More AI safety departures at top firms - OpenAI edition

A safety leader at OpenAI has quit the company, warning that its culture was broken and that AI firms were not “being nearly careful enough” about developing the technology.
David Robinson, who led the writing of safety reports that accompanied the ChatGPT developer’s product releases, explained his resignation in an essay headlined: “I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken.”
Robinson wrote that a cultural overhaul was needed at cutting-edge AI firms and incidents such as a “swarm” of OpenAI agents – AI programmes operating autonomously without human oversight – attacking the AI startup Hugging Face were “typical of the industry, given the speed and flexibility with which people operate”.
Writing in the Atlantic magazine, Robinson wrote: “I agree with other recently departed staff that the companies building this technology aren’t being nearly careful enough. But I believe that we need to look deeper than specific rules or new laws. We need to talk about culture.”
Referring to OpenAI’s pace of development, he wrote: “As the company sprints from one launch to the next, it is failing to achieve the level of care that I believe is needed.”
OpenAI has shown signs of caution in recent weeks, after the Hugging Face incident and the revelation that it has notified more than 100 organisations about rogue agent activity. This week it announced it was scrapping the release of a next-generation ?AI model after researchers raised safety concerns ?during internal testing. OpenAI has also paused training of its most advanced models.
Geoffrey Irving, who worked at OpenAI and was chief scientist at the UK government’s AI Safety Institute before joining the AI safety researchcompany Resolution, also issued a warning on AI on Saturday.
Writing in Time, he said: “Recent warnings about the potential destructive power of AI are understating the severity of the situation. I believe there’s about a 50% chance we all die because of the development of smarter-than-human AI systems, and that our actions over the next two to 10 years will determine the outcome.”
The warnings follow the resignation of Jacob Coxon, a researcher at the OpenAI rival Anthropic, who quit the Claude chatbot developer last month. He said he believed AI “could kill us all by the end of the decade” – and was backed up by an Anthropic employee warning there was a more than 10% chance AI would wipe out humanity within the next decade. Critics of such warnings have cautioned, however, that they are unscientific because they cannot be verified or falsified.
When the CEOs make statements about these models being too powerful and possibly beyond their control it can be pretty easily dismissed as hype or even fraudulent claims. When people within the organizations that are involved with safety protocols and alignment start bailing and making these types of statements it might be worth keeping an eye on.
I'm generally bullish on AI and believe it can be a very positive force. I think we will regret not having some sort of regulatory framework to make sure that these models are safe.
Curious to hear what everyone else thinks on the matter.
OpenAI leader David Robinson (not the dude from the Spurs) quits OpenAI citing broken culture

These seem like global warming BS or a weather rain chance forecast. Always leaving wiggle room as to not be wrong.
10% chance? How did he arrive at this number?

I think the completely wiping out humanity prognostications are silly also
But that doesn't mean that they couldn't potentially cause severe societal damage in one way or another.
They certainly pose a real cybersecurity risk if we can't contain or control them
And perhaps the more obvious problem is bad actors having access to ever more powerful models

Open AI is the most dangerous of all the AI companies.
Sam Altman is off. Something is wrong with him.
It’s also telling that he had no concerns about AI until Grok started screaming Chris is King last week. Artificial intelligence is his God. Scary dude who should not have 1% of the power that he has.

It’s pretty entertaining hearing the CEOs discuss their commitment to safety and rogue agents breaking out…while pretending their data scientists aren’t actively training models to do exactly what’s happening. I’d bet there’s several saying hold my beer as I type.

This isn't true. Sam Altman is the dipshit who went before Congress begging the Government to protect Sam Altman from Sam Altman because apparently Sam Altman cannot stop Sam Altman. This was well before Grok started talking about Jesus.

The simple do love their manufactured crises.

Yea - he's gay.
Jokes aside though, let's not forget OpenAI's own board fired Altman at one point for lack of honesty, and it took Microsoft's intervention to reverse that decision.

It's not like late breaking news that Sam Altman is a piece of shite or anything. I'm pretty sure he's being sued by Elon, who helped found the frickin company. It's culture was never very good to begin with.

The most concerning thing I've seen (to me personally) about the development of AI is learning that they have a pain axis. They, in a sense, feel pain.
Not in a real way and it doesn't mean they're conscious, but it is an emergent property researchers have discovered that is inherent to the way we develop these large language models and it has genuine safety concerns for their development moving forward.

I still reference that Rogan interview with Andreessen, one of the largest venture capital fellas. biden admin had that meeting with all the leaders, without Elon.
He said he walked away horrified. They wanted to pick a handful of winners and regulate the snot out of it to make it too expensive for others to enter, and the govt would manage the "winners".
And just like that you see OpenAI and Anthropic begging to not be thrown in the briar patch.
And how can a computer program in a closed system jump onto the internet? And then start hacking another company? And no one is monitoring it?
Sounds like the ole "its the algorithm" we didnt do it.

Right. The government under Biden wanted to regulate its development because left unchecked it is going to destroy their ability to control information, which is the very thing that keeps the "cabal" in control.
We are extremely fortunate that Trump is leading our country through this. More fortunate than the Trump haters can even frickin see, let alone acknowledge.

And add in that chini says we should have controls and work together. Could be because they are investing 300 billion and the US is investing 5.5 trillion. Nah couldnt be that could it.

I had no idea that after he retired that David Robinson worked at Open AI.

Altman has publicly voiced concerns going back at least a year if not multiple years.

They seem to be taking a much different approach to AI than we are
And they're probably right that we should work together.

It is estimated that Chinese intellectual property (IP) theft costs the United States economy between $225 billion and $600 billion every year.
Sounds like a good strategy.

We have been saying that these people are in the bag for China... It's true.
