Syria has been in the news a lot the last few days.

If bombs were going to be dropped in that region I would have expected (and expecting) the bombs to be dropped in Syria.

Boring.

The attack on Wednesday marked the fourth time in five months that missiles have flown over Riyadh, as the Houthis step up efforts to demonstrate they can reach the Saudi capital, and threatens to escalate a regional rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

well maybe we shouldn't be so depended on the Saudi backed petro dollar.

Hoping for war isnt how you back off of the petro dollar. You do that in times of peace.

A few minor publications are reporting that the Saudi missile defense system intercepted 2 missiles.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil hit its highest in more than three years on Wednesday after Saudi Arabia said it intercepted missiles over Riyadh and international tensions about Syria grew. Both U.S. crude and global benchmark Brent traded at the highest levels since 2014 as concerns about airstrikes drove the market higher.

Think Yemen silly.

The Houthis in the Yemen are Iranian proxies just like Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran is also propping up Assad in Syria. It's all connected.

What is going on is that the Saudis and Iranians are basically trying to go forward with a winner-take-all struggle over the whole of the Middle East. The U.S., Egypt, and Israel are on the side of the Saudis while Russia is on the side of the Iranians with Pakistan, Iraq, and Turkey riding the fence.

It appears that the deal Trump has struck will leave the Kurds pissing in the wind again, but have the Turks join our side to occupy northern Syria, Israel and the Lebanese Army work together to take out Hezbollah, U.S. shell Syria from the West, and Saudi Arabia hit them from the East. It appears the end goal is for a regime change in Syria (or even a complete partition of the country divided between surrounding countries), a defeat of the Houthis in Yemen with an installation of the internationally recognized Saudi-aligned government, a final resolution of the Palestinian problem, and a final coup in Iran to oust the Ayatollah from power. In exchange, Saudi Arabia cuts off its support for Wahhabism, de-claws the police of vice and virtue, and modernizes its country's civil rights laws.

If all somehow goes according to plan, this would work out splendidly for the U.S., but if it backfires even a little bit, we'll be seeing hundreds if not thousands or even tens of thousands of American GI's returning home in bags and boxes.

It would make geopolitical sense for Putin to start a war that would spike the cost of oil. It is like a massive chunk of the Russian economy

Yup when the oil prices went down, bread lines started coming back.

Russia is a welfare state and its citizens need their benefits.

They used to do live shows in an open air location at US bases in Iraq during time of war. I think they’ll be fine in Riyadh.
