They may catch a hanger for sure. But this is gonna sound a bit strange: if given the choice between a hung jury/mistrial, and perhaps let's say jury returning a guilty verdict on the least of the charges......I'm not so sure the latter of those isn't the better outcome. Even if it meant serving a year or two once all's said and done. He already would get credit for, what, 5 or so months he was in jail before bonding out? So with good time and/or parole he probably wouldn't be there very long. And it's a near certainty that during those 5 months as well as any potential time in the future he'd reside in a special custody area of the jail/prison that makes him much more secure in safety. Same location they put inmates who are cooperating against another inmate on a case and those accused of or convicted of child sex crimes. That's just what they do, for liability reasons.

My reasoning is this: if mistrial occurs, Chauvin will have to face a new trial in due course, which would require ponying up again for his expert witnesses, as well as a new round on his attorney fees. He already had to sell his house to help cover all those expenses thus far (as well as his bond), so I've gotta believe he's hurting for money currently, especially such hefty lump sums all due about the same time.

Also, mistrial gives the state the notable opportunity to reflect on areas they didn't do well with in first trial, and make crucial adjustments. A second trial favors the state IMO. The state has the ability and resources to add another expert or two to address previous shortcomings, but Chauvin will have a very hard time matching. If I were in his position I'd be much more worried about the second trial.

Bottom line, of course acquittal is clearly the best outcome for him, but hypothetically speaking remove all out acquittal from the equation.....of the remaining options I surmise conviction of the least offense nets the best possible outcome amongst a group of less than ideal outcomes.
