Military Baws, how do you gauge "morality" when deployed to a combat zone?

Do/Did you question the motives of those that sent you there?

Was it engrained into you that's it's simply your duty?

Was there ever a particular battle or overall war that you've looked at differently with the benefit of hindsight?

I'm not trying to be inflammatory.. no ulterior motives here.. I'm just curious

What we did in the Balkans was wrong. I was over there in 96, 97, 98, and 00. The whole thing bothers me to think back on. My issue with everything after 01 is we fought with both arms and a leg tied behind our backs most of the time. Losing friends/brothers during that time then witnessing the withdraw after I retired makes me sick to my stomach also. Their lives were sacrificed for nothing. Outside of a few moments, what did we accomplish? Is what it is, I guess. I’m glad my son has no interest in serving.

OIF vet here. I question it now but at the time most of us were in our early 20s. We were just kids and wanted to kick some arse. We didn't understand politics. It's the equivalent of practicing football but never playing a game. When it comes it's pretty exciting at first. Reality does set in rather quickly though when you see kids and innocents being killed.

A lot of older soldiers questioned why we were in Iraq. I was mid 20s and single and didn’t really care why I was there. But now that I am older, I better understand their point of view. I would say meaning and purpose are the most important things.

One instant I've thought about since I read about it and wondered what I would do:

At the very end of the American troops leaving Vietnam the troops were running across the roof of the American embassy. They stopped for a second next to a pallet of American hundred dollar bills for just a second.

I wonder if I would have grabbed a stack or two and stuffed them in my jacket and if I did would I feel guilty about it. Would fellow military men condemn that? (not that I would tell them). I'm guessing yes.

Until Politicians are required to send their sons and daughters first. STHU !

Other than Iraqi Freedom, when has war been fought with lives on the line and Congress in silence?

Joe Biden proved his level of stupidity when by his own hand, pulled the trigger on the suicide vest.

Then looked at his watch each time a flag draped casket came out of that plane. Even the Royals send their sons to the military, just for something to do.

You'll believe what you want to. There's no sense in trying to convince you otherwise.

I probably shouldn't have put that disclaimer in the OP and instead just left it at my simple questions.

Grats on latching onto the low hanging fruit though. You really added a lot to the discussion.

No. Those decisions were way, way above my pay grade. Did I bitch about shite? Yes.

Sort of. The entire post 9/11 effort was complete bullshite with the benefit of hindsight. The way politicians muzzled the attack dogs meant it would all be for nothing. Early on, things were great we were moving fast and rolling up tons of bad guys. By the end, you had to confirm you were being shot at accurately enough to endanger yourself, it could just be gunfire in your direction. The ROE turned into complete dogshit.

At the point of attack, the macro doesn’t matter, the moment does. The best way to survive those moments is to be focused on the objective….

I am very proud of my military career 22 years. But I have become a terrible recruiter for….every child of friends or family that want to enlist I tell them straight out the job of the military is to “kill people and break their shite” as a means of carrying out American Foriegn Policy whether you like the policy or not. If you are not ok with this then don’t join.

Too many kids joining to go to college(which is a great benefit) and don’t realize the benefits they are being sold is not the job.
