Do you understand how much insurance has risen in south la? There are people in shitholes paying $750 a month in insurance alone
It really depends on location. Our insurance is something like $2300/yr in BR.

Wife and I, about $200K between the two of us, give or take. Private school kids, nice-ish house. About a third of mortgage payment is taxes and insurance, we travel a few times a year, but nothing extravagant. About $800\ month in car notes for both, but thankfully almost paid off, and we just can't get comfortable financially anymore. Part of it is that my wife likes to waste money on crap, but honestly, she doesn't even get to do that. every time we get ahead, something else comes up. I can't live like this for 4 more years, we work too damned hard and put in too much time to still struggle where we weren't before.

It amuses me that, with our economy so "bad," there are 20K plus Louisianans in Vegas tonight celebrating. And airports everywhere were full of people travelling over Labor Day, paying big bucks for airline tickets, hotels, etc. My wife and I (retired public schoolteachers) drove out to Vagas this week. Spent Thurs-Fri nights in Beautiful Show Low, AZ. Hampton Inn was $275 per night and was filled up all week with travellers. But our economy is so bad. Restaurants everywhere filled with customers. The USA we saw from LA to TX to NM to AZ to NV looks very prosperous.

I have been here for almost a week visiting and good fricking gracious the misplaced priorities of some people here. I was driving outside of Lafayette and seen a ratty arse trailer with 2 cars in front of it that must have been worth 60-70K per car. Or it is more of a thing now that some people are not maintaining thier yard. You will see some driving a ratty shitbox with no attempt to perform basic maintenance, but will walk out of a store with a frivolous purchase. I now see why people get out of this state and rarely come back. To your question, middle class here 65K.

Middle class is 100k and above. I've been on both ends of the spectrum. I live comfortably now but I work a ton to live that lifestyle. Like twice more than anybody should. I have friends that make 100k combined and struggle to buy the simple stuff. What it all comes down to is money management and self control no matter how much you make. Everything is more expensive that's real, but people afford what they want to afford.

If you ever want to see how skewed the demos are on this board, look no further than a discussion of "the middle class"

It's just barely and at the extreme higher end of it.

I don’t understand how the median household income is $60k. Ain’t no way that’s real. Nobody can survive on that with kids

Medicaid at $60k/year? Are those kids disabled?

You may qualify for Medicaid if you are:
Are age 19-64 and make less than 138% of the Federal Poverty Level (about $16,000 for a single person living alone, or about $33,000 for a family of four. See the full chart.External Link)
Are pregnant
Are younger than 19
Have low income and are a parent of a child/children younger than 19
Receive Supplemental Security IncomeExternal Link
For more about Medicaid eligibility, visit the Louisiana Medicaid websiteExternal Link or call 1-888-342-6207.
$60k is almost double the allowable income for a mom and 3 kids.

Again, at $60k/year?
These threads never cease to impress.

Middle class in Louisiana… how much?
Basically however much you make.
I'd guess 90% of Americans would self-label as middle class.

I decided to put 20% down on my 800k dream home. The other cash I decided to invest.
I’ll manage my mortgage from there. But I do appreciate your concern.

To the people that have a $2000 mortgage, did you consider saving money a little longer so that you wouldnt have the weight of a $2000 payment over the next 30 years?

Mine in BR is a little less than that and the house is above median. It is nothing like what people in Nola are dealing with.
