Although the jury concluded that Meta had over 43 million violations of the state’s unfair practices act, with each transgression carrying a civil penalty as high as $5,000, a New Mexico judge was responsible for determining the ultimate fine. The Wednesday filing showed that the state was awarded $219.5 billion, but the penalty was ultimately reduced to $25 billion.
“The extraordinary number of willful violations found by the jury, the duration and repetition of the conduct, the breadth of subjects on which violations occurred, the involvement of senior Facebook leadership, the size of New Mexico audiences reached, and the clear intentional and systematic nature of Facebook’s repeated misstatements established in the trial record support the highest level of penalty allowed by the New Mexico Unfair Practices Act – $5,000 per violation found by the jury,” New Mexico district court judge Francis Mathew wrote in the filing.
The judge added that interest on the penalty shall accrue at the rate of 15% each year until the fine is paid off in full.
In August, a court ordered Meta to pay $567 million into a fund over child harm.

Meta stock price is up 3% after hours.
The money Meta made by selling that private data dwarfs the fine they received.

Eventually this kind of thing will catch up with them. I hope they get the full cigarette company treatment.

I think you're under estimating female vanity.
Attention is like oxygen to women.
They don't care about privacy, they only care about getting likes on their goofy photos.

These lawsuits are as ridiculous as the ones suing oil companies for climate change.
Its akin to suing Sears 70 years ago because kids were looking at their catalog and saw some women in underwear.
Tell the fcking parents......to be parents.
Lawyers are the bane of society. Every plastic wrapped toy warning us not to have a child suck the bag in their mouth...no shat.
Over 30 years ago I picked up a new company car from the dealer and stopped at a drive through. They handed me the drink, I popped out the drink holder and there was a warning that striking my head on it could cause harm. No doubt some arsehole lawyer with a class action lawsuit made a fortune and now you have an idiotic warning label staring at you.
The real objective is to force these companies to comply "with regulations" and ensure they only hear the liberal message the government wants to control. Just what they are doing in Europe, and their intentions for AI.
