We have this debate every time there is a mass shooting. We all know gun control laws will not stop mass shootings. I hear people state often that a mental health list is just a list that the government can work on to take our guns away. This is a BS point to me. We are going to have to make this hard on all of us gun owners to make this hard on the people that shouldn't own guns. Gun ownership is a constitutional right but no where in the constitution does it say it should be easy.

How many people have been labeled "white nationalist" or "Nazi" for simply stating they agree with Trump about only 1 thing? Don't go against the grain or be labeled a Russian bot.

No thanks.

Liberals like Joy Behar wouldn't even let Mike Pence own a gun.

How can there be mental background checks when there is Hippa, sealed adolescent records, and loons who simply go unidentified?

you remember that "no fly list" everyone use to want to use to restrict firearms? A sitting US Congressman got on that list.

how many of them have actually had a mental health check up? I am stating that what we have been doing isn't working. Arming teachers is a bad idea , at this point having armed guards at schools sounds like a great idea . Do we just keep on doing nothing?

Mental Health is a big contributor and it needs a lot more focus but I don’t see how you take away someone’s second amendment right without true due process. It’s like saying if you’re on a terrorist watch list then you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun. It sounds nice but it’s not practical.

Living in freedom and being able to defend ourselves against crazies.

Do you want to ban alcohol every time someone dies in a DWI crash??

Who oversees this list?

Who determines whether or not someone is "Sane"?

Are those people held accountable if someone they deemed "Sane" shoots up a school or church?

I can very easily see mental health care professionals saying "I'm not taking a chance that I miss something, No one is sane enough to have a gun"

This is a logical first step.
quote:

If a shooter is found to have used weapons not registered to him prosecute the frick out of whomever the weapon is registered to unless that weapon had been reported stolen. And yes gun do not magically appear out of nowhere. At some point in that weapons life it was sold to someone that had to like that weapons serial number to the purchaser. If that person can not show proof of sale or a LE report of it being stoles than it is the last owners responsibility to secure that weapon. (I know this isn't how the law works right now but it should, and this would not infringe upon the 2 Amend. And its not a gun registry, it's using the information that is currently required to be collected in non person to person sales.) This would end proxy purchases and forces people who buy guns to be accountable and responsible for them. I'm 100% anti-gun control but I am 100% firearm owner accountability. No way in hell I would even sell a gun to by brother without writing up a simple bill of sale. CYA. Cause not everyone is as responsible as I am with weapons.

Ignoring morons like you is a good start. What other individual rights are also going to be subject to such a background check? How would you feel if you were failed and couldn't access the internet?

I'd feel pretty good about that about now....

East Baton Rouge Parish already does this with BRPD and EBRSO. When was the last time you've heard of a mass school shooting in EBR?

there should be due process. The Texas church shooter fell through the cracks because the VA didn't do there job. Proper mental health checks stops him from legally buying a gun.

the individual right that allows you to harm the masses should require a mental health check. now go right ahead and say something about renting a truck and running it through a crowd.

Answer this for me.

Sounds wonderful in theory. But in practice would be horribly mishandled and abused.

What mental disorders would bar one from owning a firearm?

How long would they be barred from owning a firearm? (Mental health is fluid. Just because someone was suicidal 10 years ago after their parents died and they got dumped by their so within a week of each other doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to own a gun now.)

Who decides who is capable of owning a firearm? Would you not agree that certain psychiatrist would let their subconscious bias skew their opinions of their client, either by passing someone who should fail, or by failing someone who should pass just because of their personal beliefs?

What would be the route for those deemed unfit to challenge the decision and keep their rights?

How long would this last? A year, 5, 10, forever?
