yeah thats exactly what caving for 1.6b would do.
You are grossly underestimating the effects of Trump caving here. Trump has been defeated if he takes this deal and his base will be demoralized.
He will get nothing done at all the next two years. This is his last stand.

the shutdown is a political loser for the GOP at this juncture in time,
Only if Trump goes to Mar-a-Lago for Christmas during a shutdown. If he stays in at the White House and McConnell, Schumer and Pelosi go home and Trump tweets, "I'm working during the Christmas holiday while others enjoy R&R but I have no one to work with. I wish Schumer and Pelosi were here so we can get the government back up and running. Apparently this shutdown is not a priority for them. Merry Christmas everyone. Enjoy your time off."
...then he would firm up positive political perception in his favor big time.

who is the devil? schumer or trump? who lies more?
Schumer. My sources say that Schumers boyfriend told them that when Schumer snores, the noises he makes form sentences and they are always lies.

Zero is a defeat. Now it is much easier to go get more because they have accepted it once before.

So y'all have moved the goalposts so far that Trump getting a steel fence that won't even make it across California is a win?
I guess you didn't see the picture of this steel fence. It is pretty badass.

the last major one hurt the dems because they were in power.
Yeah and the pain from that shutdown lasted a month for them and the Dems went on to a sweeping victory in the midterms.
Shutdowns are so overblown.

I don't know what you are laughing about. You think he's going to accomplish something? He barely could with control of both chambers.

And when the dems take over in Jan that money will be washed away. The entire news cycle will be taken up 24/7 with "investigations" of Trump. The repubs put on defense again.
Shut it down.

He's almost done his entire agenda except the wall and healthcare reform.
The fact the wall hasn't been done yet lies completely with the GOP leadership and Trump himself for capitulating in October.
I agree the way forward is definitely going to be difficult after 2020 but if the American people are in line with Trump's vision, it shouldn't matter. The dems obstructing him will help the GOP.
If not, then it's obviously not what America wants.

Trump needs to remember the lesson Ronald Reagan learned. You can never make a deal with liberals.
They will stab you in the back the second you turn around

From an optics standpoint I agree with you.
If he got $1.6 billion with no DACA concessions? I could make an argument for taking that. Spend that on a big beautiful wall from CA to El Paso (CA already has a fence/wall across 75% of its border. AZ and NM only have about 20% protected).
Have something to show in the 2020 campaign. Campaign on finishing the wall. Rs win back the House and reach 60 in the Senate. Sets up a second term of domination.
*Even if he got $5 billion today the wall would not be completed 100% in the next 12 months. Baby steps. Progress not perfection.

You think the 2013 shutdown lead to the republican victories in 2014? No way. Obamacare helped that happen.
Posted on 12/21/18 at 4:56 pm to Jake88
It was part of a bigger picture.
The democrats shoving it down our throat and then not even being able to govern with power and compromise, forcing the GOP to shut it all down?
Terrible optics for the dems.
