The powers that be wanted to make the troops wallow their nose in the ignominious defeat as they were leaving.
This was their punishment because the American people have grown weary of these perpetual wars of Empire.

They were ordered to clean up after 12,000 Afghans, which is unacceptable and absolutely screams "political bullshite". I would agree with you if it was just them cleaning up after themselves, but that is not the case here.

I assume someone was being small minded and literal. And didn’t understand how it didn’t matter.
I’d be curious though, maybe it was a pride thing, or it stemmed from Washington’s fear, and their desire for everything else to go as smoothly as it could, under the circumstances.

I personally have seen enough Simtex brought back unofficially to start a small war with. Most of it was used for some 4th of July shenanigans, but there is a tin of war equipment that was left.
