This White House has mastered messaging. Trump has 6-10 points he wants to make irrespective of the questions. He even reserves the right not to answer questions. No one does it better than the President.

The big lesson from Trump 1.0, is that the President can do whatever he wants within the Executive. The once every so often Cabinet secretary/VP briefings work nicely for the messaging and obfuscation when necessary (I can't speak to that...I'm just the Commerce Secretary...or whatever).

As for history, I am not going to drag every quote. See the summary below. Yes, after Huckabee left they named a press secretary...but she didn't give a briefing for over 6 weeks. The various cabinet dudes is working. Why rock the boat?

AP reports that Vance had also conducted only two briefings while Leavitt was on maternity leave earlier in the summer.

So, roughly speaking, late July through the end of August was a six-week period without a traditional White House press briefing.

That means the current pattern isn't unprecedented for Trump—it resembles the late-2019 Trump model much more than the traditional modern White House model.

One important caveat: Trump himself has continued to talk to reporters considerably more than the briefing schedule might suggest. His public schedule includes frequent interactions with the press, and the White House continues to publish videos and transcripts. The distinction is that those interactions are often informal exchanges rather than a scheduled briefing in which the press secretary takes questions from the entire White House press corps.
