Trades and craftsman have pride, because they are skilled. Not assembly line workers.

SFP, you're a good man but downplaying offshoring of blue collar jobs, combined with importing illegal (aka underpriced) labor to fill the remaining BC jobs dismisses the squeezing of a whole class of Americans. Those are the hopeless folks we're discussing. There is NO GROUP regardless of race, upbringing, religion, or nationality that exists without an inherent "mindset" hoping their kids will have opportunities they didn't.

What kind of quality job can someone who barely graduated highschool get in a country with few blue collar domestic manufacturing opportunities?

That is a conundrum but what do you realistically do about it? You can’t turn back technology, which again is as much of a problem as globalization.

As you can probably gather from my posting handle I used to be a journalist, and six years ago I interviewed the Republican governor of my very red Deep South state, who probably is going to run for governor in two years, and he made the statement that within a decade, 60% of existing jobs in this country would be eliminated by STEM and AI.

I thought that was a jarring assertion, whether true or not, because you think the elimination of old-school smokestack industry was disruptive …

You tell me.
We've imported millions of basically indentured servants through our southern border. So you tell me why foremen and/or owners were so incompetent they were not able to hire under those absurd conditions.

These jobs pay better than dehumanizing assembly line work

But it's dirty and hard, so they refuse..

We have the most expensive workforce on the planet. And you're suggesting... we pay... more?

You're gonna need a bigger tariff!

And people just think the younger generation that sits on tik tok all day and wants to be an insta star is going to work on an assembly line for 25 bucks an hour. Ha. You know who will? All the immigrants we are kicking out.

Someone did not read what they are "attempting" to respond to. Tisk tisk TA ... you're normally FAR better than that.

It's interesting how this board is very anti-union and blames them for offshoring, now everyone wants a job and union wage again for factory baws.

Unions definitely contributed to the collapse. There is no doubt about that. They reached the point where they had achieved what the goal should have been, and then they got stupid about it.

February unemployment as 4.1%. Not sure where all these workers are going to come from.

Not a bad thing. But, if tariffs "work" we're definately going to need more workers. No one has ever said where they are going to come from, despite me asking numerous times.

Seemingly its a widely symptomatic problem. Everyone I know trying to hire outside of tech has been struggling for years. If it's the pay... they've already priced themselves out of the market.
