Your city is not unshitty because an out of towner shows up there and only sees shitty things and you tell him “well, you just didn’t go to the right places.” If all an unsuspecting out of towner sees is shitty, your city is shitty.
Coming from someone who lives in a generally shitty place that still has nice places if you seek them out. Yes, it’s still shitty in spite of that.
If you can’t make your city at least generally palatable for unsuspecting out of towners, your city is shite.

In the early 90s i was out there right after the riots. The buildings were still all burnt out. Lots of smog when landing. Lots of gang violence at the time but didn't witness anything. My sister lived in near Big Bear. Traffic was insane for this midwest kid. It was fun but i remember after 2 weeks that i was ready to go home. I think winter out there would be great.

If there are homeless camps and needles on the streets beside piles of human feces then your city sucks.
It’s like if you have to add fruit to your beer then your beer sucks.

It’s hard to mess up bacon and eggs.
Is there a better breakfast place nearby?
The homeless guy did load up his shite on his bike and bike trailer and moved North. He didn’t linger. I didn’t see a cop during the hour or so I was on the beachfront. I saw a couple on the streets on my way in.

It has gotten really bad. Travel tip - I only fly into Burbank or Orange County when I have to fly in for business. LAX is the worst Airport in America. The other two options are very easy to get in and out of.

John Wayne is a great option

Let me guess, you live in Livingston?

Brother's Burritos or Good Stuff are both right there. Hell, even Hennessey's Tavern has a decent breakfast.

Yea they bathe at the beach showers and go. Sometimes they linger under the pier during the weekdays, but on weekends they GTFO because Hermosa doesn't want them messing up the tourism.

I love that airport. My daughter always wants to get there early so she can go play the piano.

Not many metros in the USA can compare to the L.A. metro, though. It is actually a few metros in one. You have the LA metro and the Riverside-San Berdino metro but the LA Metro is very diverese.
Maybe Dallas-Ft Worth can come close but the point is that what people associate as all of L.A. is not accurate. Downtown LA is a shithole. That is a fact no one will argue against but there are a lot of cities in the area that are very nice and clean. The LA metro has 29 of the wealthiest zip codes in the USA. Second to only Silicon Valley. You have to get out of downtown. LAX is shitty but drive South a few miles and you are in Manhattan Beach. Homes there are about $1600 per sq ft. Its home to Marvel Studios, the LA Lakers practice facility, and the LA Kings practice facility. Any of you would love to live there I promise you.
I lived on the border of MB and Hermosa for 3 years and it was like being on vacation every day. No crime outside of Vince Vaughn getting a DUI outside of my condo one night because he got drunk at Hermosa and tried to drive a few miles home to Manhattan. The worst crimes were people leaving their cars open and people taking stuff or bikes getting stolen.
The point is that he was a few miles from some of the wealthiest RE in the USA and he labeled the whole metro as a shithole which is ridiculous.

The metro is fine, the city proper is disgusting.

tents set up on street corners. I swear, I saw more ratty, inbred looking subhumans just driving from LAX to Burbank than I've seen my entire life in the south. Let me hear another dumbass Californian make fun of southerners again...
Why didn't you just fly into Burbank?

In the 1980s I had an uncle that lived in El Segundo and you could see the airport from his home. I remember it being a pretty nice area at the time. Not exactly high society Beverly Hills, but a nice clean neighborhood where you didn't have to worry about much.
He left there in the 1990s saying it had become a third world ghetto. I can only imagine what it's like now.

SoCal was pretty much heaven until a couple of decades ago. I imagine it would have been a perfect place to grow up from the 40s through the 70s.

One of the biggest things Cal has going for it is the ocean and its beaches. But the pacific is so cold there the water is unusable. This is why the Gulf of America wins.

It’s third world people!

It’s one of the most disgusting areas on the planet. It’s no better than somewhere in Mogadishu or in Thailand
Good grief, some of you people......

El Segundo? It is expensive as hell. About $1200 per sq ft and many houses sell for a million only to be torn down for a bigger and newer house. The downside is you are sandwiched between LAX, Chevron, and the water recclamation plant, aka shite Pipe, I spoke about earlier. Pricing in El Segundo never made sense to me, considering all of the above. The only thing I can think of is proximity to the beach, even if you have to go around a sewage plant.
Still, its hardly a third-world ghetto

drive south to God’s country between Newport and La Jolla, thank me later.
Possibly the nicest area in the country. I've always been a big fan of Huntington Beach. Had family that lived there and was always excited to get out there. Really, Orange County down to San Diego is awesome.
It's always funny, I tell people if they've never been that the image of Southern California that they have in their mind doesn't exist in LA. What they are thinking is really OC to San Diego.
