it would be equally pointless to have a special counsel go through this effort and level of investigation only to leave indictable crimes sitting on the table because they were surplus to requirements.

Probably none, but let's take this a step further. Manafort was campaign chair and had direct ties to Trump. Manafort's income stream from Ukraine was drying up. Manafort needed money, so he and Gates started doctoring financial statements to defraud banks for loans. Around that time he started working for the Trump campaign...for free. Maybe he was just being nice, but do you think an investigator might want to know why a guy in financial distress would offer to work for free? Perhaps Gates is the one that can answer that, and that answer might tie back to Trump.
I'm not saying that is the case, but just playing out why there might be pressure on Gates to flip.
