A veto would have been worthless due to the level of support. The correct action should have been to try to talk congress down off the ledge. The white houses only power isn't the veto, it also has considerable soft power and can give shelter to congressmen who are doing what may be "publically" perceived to be a bad thing.

Trump didn't want less spending though, he wanted more and was down on the record as stating he was going to Veto it unless they gave even more cash away (which thankfully congress did not). Did everyone in the Nation need a cash giveaway? Absolutely not. Did we need to give away trillions of dollars to businesses that likely would have failed anyways? Nope. Money should have been targetted at those hit by the pandemic (e.g. folks who lost their jobs and could not find work) and businesses that are critical.

Instead we just gave cash to everyone, gave up to 10 million dollars in grants to businesses (only 40% of which had to go to salaries, the rest the businesses could simply pocket). It was a fricking mess and people grifted the hell off it.

You don't think Trump suspended the Social Security tax with the promise that if elected he "might" make it permanent because people actually needed that do you? It was a classic carrot and stick approach. I'll give you this tax cut.. maybe.. if you re-elect me. The dude put his fricking signature on the checks that were sent to everyone. You think that was an accident?
