Like clockwork, colleges are already fighting ICE’s rule barring foreign online students

I don’t understand the problem. If your program is going to be all online, then do it from your home country. There is no need for you to physically be on American soil. And if the internet in your home country sucks, go to a school in person there?

Harvard and MIT are suing Trump admin to stop this EO on the visas for foreigners for online classes.

Why stop at the online class ones, send them all back.

Does it apply to grad students who work on campus in labs and such?
I’ll also say this, if you have a lease and you’re paying for an apartment this is a raw deal.

LOL
Bet this is a gambit to make schools open.
And it's going to work. Those virtue signaling assholes will "endanger" everyone just to poke Trump in the eye.

Some of these schools are probably hoping to still get room and board charges for online course students.
Should just say the school dorms can’t be open if the school isn’t doing in-person classes. Would stop that shite in a heartbeat.

They’re going to do “hybrid,” have them come in person for one class and online the rest.

The Michigan prez is mad.
quote:
At the University of Michigan, we add our voice to the many in higher education to express our strong disagreement with the temporary policy announced July 6 by the Department of Homeland Security to further restrict the educational opportunities for international students.
Based on an initial review by our International Center staff, this guidance does not conflict with the University of Michigan’s plans for fall term classes consisting of a mixture of in-person and remote classes. The guidance allows this type of hybrid model for international students studying on the Ann Arbor campus. It also allows students outside the country to take U-M classes online.
Given the poorly controlled nature of the COVID-19 pandemic in many places across our nation, institutions of higher education need to maintain flexibility in how we choose to safely deliver our curricula. Our international students must not be penalized if our best judgments dictate that we need to return to fully remote instruction.
We continue to oppose arbitrary restrictions on international students who have been and continue to be valuable members of our community of scholars. Even with this initial review that shows a less direct impact on our students, we agree with the statement from the Association of American Universities – of which U-M is a member – that calls this policy “immensely misguided and deeply cruel to the tens of thousands of international students who come to the United States every year.”
The University of Michigan is joining with our AAU colleagues and many others in business and education to further understand the impact of this new guidance and work with congressional leaders and administration officials to rescind or substantially alter this unnecessary and disruptive policy.

What about grad assistants? What about lab workers? Researchers? Crappy internet in their 3rd world hellhole?
Oh and many of the undergrads get no financial help.
There is absolutely no reason to do this.

Is this what the 14th amendment will be stretched to include? They already said it gives abortion rights, will they now say it gives foreign aliens the right to attend US universities? Actual American citizens don’t even have that right.

I knew a basketball student athlete who had an identical twin brother. Instead of the student athlete going to his assigned classes --- he sent in his twin brother.
Professor caught him.

Defund public universities that try to circumvent this and cut all subsidies to private universities that do this as well (actually, I’d like private universities subsidies cut all together anyway).
And this is needed.
And this is needed.

This is LSU's plan. They are telling international students to make sure they are in at least 1 hybrid delivery class and this bypasses the ruling.

These foreign students may only make up 8-12% of the student population at these schools, but they make up a third of the revenue because they all pay full sticker price - very few receive scholarships of any kind.
That's why colleges are pissed.

Does Harvard or MIT have standing to sue?
It would seem that an affected student would have to sue.

Labs, grad assistants, researchers, etc. Not to mention the time differences. Is a student from India supposed to log on to possibly shitty internet at 10:30 PM local time for their 1:00 PM EST live lecture?
