A coup against Trump is becoming more and more likely. Energy companies have cozy relationships with the department of energy. They both feed off of each other.

I have always marveled at the abuse you take here thinking that you really were not that dumb, I take it back.

This almost has to be a troll account, no one is really this clueless

The DOE also oversees the Strategic Petroleum Reserve which is pretty important.

Well, 1 important thing they do is that they own and maintain the nuclear weapons of the United State. All nuclear warheads in the arsenal are owned by the DOE and leased to the Department of Defense.

They're also responsible for nuclear reactors on USN vessels and radioactive waste disposal.

The do a lot of non-energy crap like the Human Genome project (which is unnerving), and I'm sure they can be cut back or perhaps merged with other agencies.

DOE: SPR, NREL, Sandia National Labs, Savana River, PNNL and others

Morons talking about gutting the DOE......

I think they should look at EPA first.

DOE also owns Pantex, which is likely the most secure and fortified facility in the country.

A DOE Q clearance is more valuable than a DOD TS clearance.

You don't need the agency but you need the work and the people....you can call it Uncle Sally if you are so bent but someone has to maintain our weapons arsenal in a safe and functional manner. A large number of DoE personnel are literally rocket scientists...and they vote for Republicans almost exclusively because they are almost all from nuclear navy....

I am pretty sure the nuclear program is run by individual power company's and the US government oversees that program.

DoE has little or nothing at all to do with private sector power production...but we have these little bothersome devils called nuclear weapons that someone has to know a little bit about....

Nothing mission critical, just developing/maintaining our nuclear program.
Our nuclear program is a joke. This entire country should've have been on nuclear power decades ago but the liberals pussies needed time thing to complain about

Out in the Permian there is a nuclear waste disposal site that is run by private contractors. DOE has the biggest office building in town to house all of their employees that oversee the operation.

This is also the site that has been shut down for 3 years (in February) because of an explosion/leak.

About 90% of the people in that building in town are also contractors my friend...the DoE workforce in Carlsbad is about 30 people....the contractors running that facility workforce runs in the thousands.

And that facility is shut down because contractors didn't have sufficient oversight at other DoE sites and some fool tried to save some money and used organic kitty litter as an absorbent material and it caused a chemical reaction that caused an explosion.

The facility your are talking about is a prime example of how we haven't quite yet won the cold war because we haven't quite yet paid the bills....of course we could just leave that shite where it is and have several million acres spread out across the entire nation uninhabitable with contaminated ground water that causes future generations all sorts of health problems....but we don't really care about any of that.

Trump says that he is going to modernize our nuclear weapons arsenal. To do that is going to require the expertise of the people in the DoE. Purge those people because of political differences and you ain't going to get a modern nuclear arsenal....you are going to be lucky to keep the one you have operational.

I normally agree with you, but you're wrong here. While nuclear power plants provide the cheapest cost of electricity per mass of fuel, the upfront capital investments required and the approval processes make it exceptionally prohibitive. Add to that the US doesn't allow for spent fuel recycling and you'd be looking at significant increases in uranium prices making electrify even more expensive. I'm a fan of nuclear energy, but it'd be impossible for it to meet even half of the US's energy demands.

True dat...and as Trump runs off GS employees doing the work at DoE for $150K a year in salaries and benefits the same people will be employed doing the same work by a private contractor for $230K a year in salaries and benefits.

A DoE engineer is most likely a GS 13 or a GS 14...so natioanlly that means $80K to $90K a year in salary and about half that amount again for benefits and overhead....so about $120K - $135K. Contract engineers working on the same project doing the same job wouldn't get out of bed for that....trust me...I know from experience....the same is true of the DoD. Almost all of the contractor personnel, by the way, were trained by the Federal government in GS positions and as soon as they gained some experience they bolted and went to the contractor side....

But of course I know that y'all consider all of the parasites because the free market should be allowed to defend the nation and make and maintain nuclear weapons....
