Said Bill Gates said he should be paying more taxes.
And I said, yeah, Bill Gates is full of shite.
Coworker seemed confused.
I said if Bill Gates said that, then why does Microsoft keep $billions in off shore accounts to protect them from tax liability.

Yep. Bill Gates is free to give every penny he has to the US government. If he really feels he isn’t paying enough in taxes, he should be telling everyone how much he sends in, over and above his liability. Simple.

That's a good example for a business, but Gates was probably talking about his personal income.
There's nothing in the world stopping him from writing annual checks to the US Treasury for however many millions it would take to assuage his guilt.

I recently voted for an increase in taxes to for police and schools in my area but it didn't pass. I don't feel like I have to write a check to the government to prove that I actually want higher taxes. That's silly and you know it
Let me ask you the reverse. Let's say you support cutting Medicare and SS. Does that mean you have to send it back?

Do you go around telling people you don’t pay enough tax? What is silly is telling people the federal government doesn’t take enough of your income, when you can easily remedy that, by sending them whatever amount makes you happy.

1. He's basically giving away much of his wealth through charity.
