A slate of bills to give individual Louisiana parishes say-so over whether carbon dioxide sequestration projects can take place locally failed Tuesday in committee, effectively killing the effort for the legislative session.

Six proposals that would allow parishes to opt-in for a vote on whether to permit CO2 capture and sequestration failed in close votes before the House Natural Resources Committee.

House Bill 5 by Rep. Mike Johnson, R-Pineville, would have had the widest impact of all the bills. It would have given every parish authority to hold referendums on carbon projects and was rejected in a 7-9 vote.

“When a project affects an entire community, the community deserves a voice,” Johnson said in support of his bill.

Reminder…Letlow supports this and her fiancé is a lobbyist for this.

The lobbyist money must be astronomical.

Almost all of the reps are telling their constituents to frick off.

Because nothing says "liberty" quite like the legislature declaring you can't have it.

Let's make those that vote for it go live by it.

It’s really telling how they are abandoning future oil and gas production for this scam.

I get that the state needs industry to locate here, but is it worth it?

Suppose Texas sweetens the deal and we are left nothing but this scam.

I think Schamerhorn and others have presented similar bills and they were also snuffed out. Apparently, if you oppose this, you are ignorant and are lying about it. BTW, this is funded by the BBB. It is essentially oil company welfare.

the biggest lie Americans have ever believed in the last 100 years is that we have a voice

I believe there was/is 12 so far. Not sure the status on each, but they will never pass.

It’s good for a few majors and is going to effectively lock up large swaths of minerals in perpetuity.

Not good for any smaller operators that might have interest in drilling here in the future.

The excuse is that the production is depleted, but that’s bullshite.

They ran off all the drilling with legacy lawsuits.

then the legislature should get away from the ITEP model and write laws that don't require tax abatement approval for each project. Let businesses figure out their own math on the front end, without having to line pockets of the people that give them tax breaks. It's all a grift.
