bullshite
I guess that makes me the first Uncle Tom, but that's some bullshite
Yes, my great grandmother and grandmother to some extent were told to speak English only in school, but not one person in my family considers ourselves victims of some great Anglo conspiracy against cajuns. It's ridiculous. If anything, I'd say people have fallen in love with the Cajun and French Creole cultures. I take offense to being deemed a victim, as would any other self respecting Cajun or French Creole in Louisiana. It's ridiculous.

Half cajun here. Glad I can be a minority in the same way Obama can.

Didn't they have separate schools for French, Indians, blacks, Creoles, etc. back in the day?
I assume these great cultures were diluted and lost because liberals demanded integration?

frick yes
this is something i think about every day, too i didn't realize it for 34 years, but it's back there in the depths of my brain, constantly rattling around. i had no idea this was even a thing until one of my betters explained it to me, and now i realize i've been in utter pain for 34 years. nothing will ever be able to fill that hole that i didn't know existed until this morning

I'm Cajun going back to Nova Scotia and I have my family tree printed to 30 pages from a kind relative who spent 10 years researching it. I'm sorry to say that my oldest known ancestor, Francois Zachery, was in the beaver pelt business in Canada. I'm opposed to using animal fur. Beavers are cute.
Some facts:
1. New Orleans is not Cajun. They say words like 'Boyd and Doyt'. 'I shot the boyd and it fell to the doyt.'
2. Edwin Edwards was not Cajun. Come on? Edwards? Same for Justin Wilson. Both of their accents were not real Cajun.
3. New Iberia, Lafayette, Broussard, Lydia, Carencro, Abbeville, Crowley and Rayne are Cajun. Lake Charles is part of Texas.
Ville Platte is the beginning of North La. and all they have are funeral homes, barber shops and bars. It's a good place to get a hair cut, get drunk and then die.
4. Cajuns don't care if you're a homo. But let them know. Otherwise they will insist that you meet their niece. She's single, 25, and has a nice personality.
5. Cajuns believe you should not allow your children to drink beer before the age of 7. Coffee is OK starting at age 5.
If ya'll have any other questions about Cajuns I'll be here to answer them.

Ok, I want on this minority grievance gravy train. I've been to NOLA a few times and lived for a while south of I-10.
I... G-guys, I have to come out, and admit my true self to the world. All my life, since 10 minutes ago, I've known that there was something different about me from the other Texas kids when I was growing up. I-I have to tell everyone about the inner me now, that I've hid for so long.
I'm Trans-cajun. I've always wanted to eat Cajun food, and liked air-boats and I can say "Bonjour". I've always felt like I was really Cajun inside, and I just was suppressing the real me.
Also, if you aren't sexually attracted to me, you're a bigot now.

do you enjoy making yankees completely misunderstand your speech patterns?

Wow, that was a really powerful story.
I could tell you were trans-Cajun since the first time I saw you post.
I'm so glad you trusted us enough to share that.

Ugh. Please stop spreading ignorance and hate by stereotyping trans-Cajuns.

The lines blurr a lot though when you get to the river parishes on both sides of the river as you near New Orleans, Assension and WBR eastward really. . My family started out French Creole, but over the years as Cajuns began settling in the area, married into the Cajun culture as most families did in the area so much to the fact that I truly can't say if we are more French Creole or more Cajun. The dialect itself was quite similar to other areas speaking Cajun French, and all gibberish to a Frenchman I'm sure.

Thanks man, I really appreciate that coming from a fellow Cajun. It's so empowering to feel welcomed into a community like this one. I feel emboldened to start educating young elementary schoolers to follow their inner most feelings and redefine what ethnicity they truly are, not just what's on the outside.

just don't adopt any cajun children and then return them after a while

Well, Mike, there's an easy test to see if your family is Cajun. Cajuns reject technology. Do your parents own a microwave or a crock pot?

But if you do, be sure to quadruple down on your cause to hide your shame.

I make stock with chicken carcasses, cut my own trinity, cook rice in a pot, not a rice cooker, cook jambalaya in a 15 gallon pot on the reg, and have never burned a roux once in my life.
Do I get Cajun Cred?
