This appears to be a nation-wide trend. Time to break the back of the Teacher’s union who refuse to go back to work, while demanding full pay. Also, serves to give parents who don't want their kid's indoctrinated a choice.

Reason

quote:

In vetoing the bill last week, Beshear, a Democrat, repeated tired arguments from teachers unions and public school superintendents who fear the erosion of their monopoly control over the state's education spending.
Thankfully, the Republican-controlled state legislature wasn't listening. The state House voted51-42 on Monday evening to override Beshear's veto and the state Senate followed suit with a vote of 23-14 shortly afterward. (In Kentucky, overriding a veto does not require a supermajority vote.)

quote:

Lawmakers ultimately did the right thing for students, and for the first time, Kentucky families will have access to the schooling options they deserve to find the best fit for their kids," saysRobert Enlow, president and CEO of EdChoice, an organization that backed the bill.

quote:

The new law, originally House Bill 563, allows students in Kentucky public schools to switch school districts, and it creates a new tax-advantaged education savings program for families to use for private school tuition, to pay for tutoring, or to cover other educational expenses. The most controversial part of the proposal was the creation of a $25 million scholarship fund—to be filled by donations from private businesses, for which they would receive state tax credits—that students in Kentucky's largest counties can tap to help pay for private school tuition.

quote:

The Wall Street Journal notes on Tuesday that more than 50 school choice bills have been introduced in different states this year, with the uptick in legislative interest likely a direct result of teachers unions' unwillingness to reopen schools as the COVID-19 pandemic abates.

Yes school choice is racist. We must pour even more money into failing schools and force people to attend them. It won’t work OG course, but at least we aren’t racist.

And I’d assume the vast majority of blacks would love school choice

Kentucky is one of those simple majority override states meaning no super majority is required to override the Governor’s veto.

Not sure how I feel about. It would suck arse watching a democrat legislature with that low threshold here in Louisiana.

Be ready for the National legislature voting with simple majority. It’s going to be painful and sad. Buckle up

So, they actually already have it

Magnet schools, in Birmingham it’s Ramsey, Montgomery has Brew Tech

Wealthy and influential folks get their kids in. Smart kids that are motivated can also get in.

This is not unique to Abalama (sic)

Ramsey is one of the top ranked schools in Alabama, it’s actually really interesting, same percentage of students college bound as Mt Brook, both schools ranking towards the top in GPA and college bound for AL, exact opposite racial makeup for students

I’ve said from day one, Beshear is a one legged man in a arse kicking contest. Kentucky R’s have a 75-25 supermajority in the House. Only 8 Dems in the Senate. He’s merely a placeholder til 2023.

It’s crazy that all democrats in their primaries come out against charter schools . While a lot of their brainwashed voters put their kids in charter schools .

The teachers union opposes it and they are who got him elected so he does whatever they want. Thankfully, the state legislature has GOP supermajorities so they ended up overturning 26 other vetoes in addition to this one.

I’d love to get the $16k per kid they spend in my home county sent to my wife, and she could homeschool the kids. $48k per year and done by noon each day, and free to travel and enjoy life while they are young.

Instead, we get compulsory all day attendance and inability to teach at individual level or learning style.

You would think so wouldn't you.

I suppose, if you make this change to late in the game, the student would be so far behind at the new school they would be destined for failure.

Hasn't Kentucky voted in Democrat governors all but 1-2 terms for like 50 years?

They're a populist state with a large union presence. Teacher unions got Beshear elected the first time.

Nice to see. I wish the KY legislature would show more balls on other things like stripping Beshear's emergency powers for Covid.

I couldn't speak to the vast majority, but for those who do care, charter schools and other methods of school choice are a godsend. To get your kids in somewhere that the teachers care, the parents care, and the other kids are competing can change kids' lives.

They actually did somewhat but Beshear sued them saying it stripped him of his constitutional powers and a Judge put an injunction on the bill because is "is likely to undermine, or even cripple, the effectiveness of public health measures necessary to protect the lives and health of Kentuckians from the COVID-19 pandemic."

The bill only said the governor's emergency orders expired after 30 days unless extended by the legislature.

Dems say it is so you know it is not. There is nothing racist about allowing a parent to decide where to send their child for school and send their federal $$$ with it. That is the biggest issue, it forces schools/teachers to up their game to attract kids and the $$$ that comes with them.

Matt Bevin's idiocy got Beshear elected and only by 5000 votes statewide. Beshear has pissed a lot of people off with his Gestapo tactics (spying on people going to church) arbitrary closures etc. and his overuse of EO's.

We have had a few Republican governors but they got in and did stupid things so they were one termers.

Beshear is toast.
