I believe this is where some of the overlap between Bernie Sanders leftists and Trump right wingers comes into play.
I think the type of liberal who would be siding with the hedge funds here would be the high brow, snobby, old money style liberal in the mold of someone like Nancy Pelosi. Likewise the type of right winger who would side with the hedge funds would be an establishment Republican.

Actually, it isn't.
At a casino the losers pay the winner and the book makes money off the fees. You take LSU -5.5 and win, the sportsbook holds back 9% of your winnings and the sap who took the opponent and the points gets nothing.
In the stock market, you're part owner of the company and entitled to a share of its profits. When you buy in, someone else is selling, and unless they're in dire straits, doing so is advantageous for them. They might have bought at a lower price and are losing out only on potential future earnings.
