I'm not the rioting sort, but I agree with you. Use riot-tactics against riots, but what was happening near St. John's wasn't a riot.
Trump was triggered by the media coverage of him being in his bunker and he wanted to look bold so people scurried to secure the scene he wanted to look tough.
It's caudillo schtick.

Tear gas is the least of what should have been done to these "peaceful" protesters. You see what they did to those walls behind the president? This is within walking distance of the White House! WTH?
