I hear Slovenia is awesome... like an overlooked Italy, Med beaches, very cheap... then again, Sicily and Sardinia are beautiful and cheap, if you don't have to work for a living (there pretty much are no local economies... other than restaurants and bed and breakfast inns)... they will also sell you old, abandoned houses for $1 if you fix them up, but that is a big and costly undertaking, and you end up with a nice house in a place where nobody can make any money.

A buddy played bass in a jazz orchestra that toured Soviet Eastern Europe and Russia in the late 80s, as part of Glasnost cultural exchange stuff. He says the people were super friendly and happy to hear them. There would always be lots of military personnel at the concerts as a night off thing... he has tons of medals that they'd give him, taking them off their uniforms. "I'll get another one... please, have it!" He says everybody seemed overjoyed with Gorbachev opening things up... though they all complained about everything else to do with their governments. The military personnel especially. He said the band members all learned within 2 days that they had to pace themselves and have one drink for every five or six the people who'd swarm them at places after the concerts downed. But he says they felt like celebrities... playing these huge theaters or symphony houses packed with very enthusiastic people.
