Trump has invited Hungary’s PM Viktor Orban to join his so-called “Peace Council”. Orban says it recognizes Hungary’s role in seeking peace. Earlier, Bloomberg reported Trump plans to charge $1B for permanent seats in this body, pitched as an alternative to the UN.

With all that's going on inside America and in Venezuela, Ukraine and Iran, Greenland looks like a screw-up and a useless distraction to me.

So, we seize tankers and oil destined for Russia, and China to achieve this. Also, the production from oilfields both have spent money on. Let me see, last time I checked $100 billion from China and $20 billion spent by Rosneft are now effectively controlled by the US

how is that inconsistant with that worldview?

We gently return the Russian sailors... he sells the oil and puts the money in a Qatari bank... who knows where it ends up, eventually...

but the thing is the belief that Russia and China will be satisfied to stay in their "lanes."

Russia... probably, not by choice but...

China? No... but they aren't going to play the aggressive military game. They're smarter than that,,, Communism will probably triumph by using Capitalism as its method... who would've thought it?

We can hope... but come election time the far right parties will be pointing to his overtures while decrying the defense spending build-up at the expense of social spending, now won't they?

The European Union has officially voted to suspend trade agreements with the United States, marking a historic and volatile retaliation against President Trump's threats of tariffs over the Greenland dispute. This decision effectively dismantles the transatlantic economic partnership that has anchored Western stability since World War II, erecting a "hard border" across the Atlantic in a desperate bid to protect European sovereignty from American expansionism.

However, analysts warn that this "Fortress Europe" strategy may be built on a crumbling foundation. With Germany's industrial base fleeing to Hungary and the UK hemorrhaging capital to the UAE and US, the EU is engaging in a trade war it is economically ill-equipped to sustain against the robust American consumer market. The move is further complicated by internal divisions, as key members like Italy have already signaled a refusal to militarily oppose the US, leaving Brussels politically isolated.

This suspension represents the final fracture of the "West." By prioritizing territorial integrity (Greenland) over economic access, Europe is signaling that it views the United States not as an ally, but as a predatory rival. This pivot leaves the continent dangerously exposed, sandwiched between a hostile American "techno-state" and an opportunistic Russian-Chinese bloc offering "unconditional" ties.

NBC News: Trump's latest Western Hemisphere fixation: Canada
The president has intensified his criticism of Canada in private conversations with aides in recent weeks over what he sees as the country's vulnerability to U.S. adversaries in the Arctic.

President Donald Trump is privately ramping up his focus on another target in the Western Hemisphere, increasingly complaining to aides in recent weeks about Canada’s vulnerability to U.S. adversaries in the Arctic, according to two U.S. officials, a senior administration official and three former senior U.S. officials familiar with the discussions.

As Trump’s advisers work toward his goal of acquiring Greenland, the president has privately grown more exercised about what he sees as Canada’s similar inability to defend its borders against any encroachment from Russia or China, specifically arguing Canada needs to spend more on defense, the officials said. They said his push has accelerated internal discussions about a broader Arctic strategy and potentially reaching an agreement with Canada this year to fortify its northern border.

Now, thinking of defense and protection is not nuts... I think his bullying tactics are stupid and counterproductive...

But... "Russia?" Why is Russia such a focus in everything? I mean, they can't take Ukraine, can they? They pose no threat to the Baltic States or Europe, do they?

Why is he even counting on them being around in a few years?

US and Ukraine still talking peace, Europe capturing tankers, Russia stirs the pot, and Ukraine creeps back.

You're right and I'm sorry. It's not fair to lump everyone in like this. I apologize to you.

But yeah, I stand by my statement that he is trying to expand the borders and that he's a threat who's sold out to Putin.

Carry on.

As an infantryman and as a military analyst this is what scares me the most.

Yes, the drone airwar is bad, but when they start putting out machines that do the infantry's job (and probably more lethal) it's going to change literally everything, and not in a good way. The possible amount of power this gives douchebag tech-bros is genuinely horrifying.

It places a premium on manufacturing capabilities much of which we exported over the last 30+ years.

The manufacturing aspect is the least of our concerns. The Ukrainians are producing as many, if not more, drones than the Russians and are doing so under the worst of circumstances.

It's the idea that someone could horde drones by the millions and just attack for whatever reason they wish. Elon, or Gates, or some other narcissistic maniac tech bro could attack using robots isn't science fiction anymore, it's a reality and one that should scare everyone.

Because Russia is just a false flag for taking stuff.

Now, I've got to agree with DoubleD and say that this is a Russia-Ukraine thread.

I agree, but we need to draw a line somewhere. I want so badly to discuss the Venezuela situation here, but I don't even though this further weakens the Russian position.

Ukraine Ran Sting on U.S. Intel to Catch Russia Leaks
A French ex-intelligence operative claims it proves that Washington shared strategic information with Russia

Only two weeks into the year and the geopolitical landscape of 2026 has been marked by a significant realignment of intelligence sharing protocols between Ukraine and its traditional western partners.

Ukrainian intelligence services deliberately fed false strategic information to their American counterparts to test whether it would leak to Russian forces, according to former French DGSE operative Vincent Crouzet, in a claim aired on France’s LCI television network om 15 January that highlights deepening distrust between Kyiv and Washington under the current U.S. administration.

Vincent Crouzet, a former operative of the French Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure (DGSE) and a noted commentator on security matters, alleged during the ‘24h Pujadas’ programme that Ukrainian intelligence services have engaged in a deliberate campaign of disinformation directed at the United States.

According to Crouzet, the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, known as the GUR, intentionally provided false strategic data to American agencies.

This operation was reportedly designed as a ‘sting’ to identify the source of sensitive information leaks to Russian forces. A French ex-intelligence operative claims it proves that Washington shared strategic information with Russia

There were actual legal reasons allowing the seized ships to be seized under UNCLOS. Nations registered under denied registration, or they changed flags at sea, meaning under two flags thus legally stateless. I don't think Qatar is happy with Trump right now at all by his support of the protestors in Iran. Now shadow fleet tankers are registering as Russian. This makes them a very legal target for Ukraine. The seizures have opened the door for Baltic nations to blockade ships going to or from Russia via that route.

You must be getting info from clueless pundits regarding Venezuela and oil. Zeihan being at the top of that list. Every drop should be going any of 10 Gulf Coast refineries which love it, even without upgrading.

BTW, Citgo alone could easily take 250,000 BPD and is run by the bankruptcy court for the last few years and be profitable.

This should come as no surprise with Tulsi Gabbard as Director of Intelligence.

Great. Wonderful.

We are no longer the leaders of the free world. Our government is the leader of the leftover losers like Russia, China, and North Korea.
