Sounds like a math problem.
If each union worker was paying 5 dollars a month in dues, that is over 49 million in dues. Not counting office and other expenses, with 355 union workers that is over 140k per year per employee in salary.
So if you cut that revenue stream of over 800k employees, your income drops so of course you have to lay off the fat.
