Lake Oroville is located in Butte County in Northern California. It's California's second-largest reservoir that was formed by the building of Oroville Dam in 1961. The reservoir was first flooded and filled in 1969.

It's been a place of paradise ever since until the West's drought conditions began to take its toll. We Southern Californians would travel up there to make it a week's vacation enjoying the lake and the woods. Beautiful place.

Things have taken a turn for the worse, though, and the pics of the drought's effect on the lake are devastating to look at. Really sad.

Drought precedes famine...famine precedes pestilences.

Not sure many people know this but California has terrible water management statewide. Being woke only gets you so far. Ask the annual forest fires why they continue to burn out of control. Muh berms!

It's sad to see but let's get real here. in 1961 California said "frick you mother nature, we want a lake right fricking here on the outter edge of the desert!"

Now, we are going to get pissy 50 or 60 years later when Mother Nature rears her ugly face and says "naw fam. it don't be like that".

Same dam almost failed in 2017 due to too much water. Two years after it was at drought levels...

I am certain you are correct. But they are really getting killed with lack of rain.

And, what do you make of this anomaly.

I'm not sure what the lake building process is in Cali. but, I bet it ain't easy.

Red tape?

Trust me, the 40 million people living here --- whoops!, lost another resident to moving out -- make that 39,999,999 people living here know all about it.

It's awful, but no amount of "good" water management will get rid of this drought. God started the drought...only He can end it.

Why build anymore lakes when there's no more water to fill them?

It sucks. I get it. I have worked in the Redding and Shasta areas and loved it. Beautiful country. Would move there tomorrow if it wasn't part of CA.

The Sierra's had record snow this year including +7 feet
from 1 storm at the end of December.

Where is it all going is the question.

Yes, short story is that they allow way too much fresh water to flow into the ocean due to environmentalist lobbying.

Shouldn’t have moved there.

I have a hard time having any sympathy for the poor planning and lack of incredibly obvious foresight that the entire SW displays for this water issue. The area was never, and will never be capable of sustaining the population that “wants” to be there

im pretty sure those boats stay in the water 24/7

those are the same ones you see in the second and 3rd before pictures

most of those dont even have trailers to put them on to take them out of the water

Those are different bridges…you sure that’s the same lake?

I chuckled at that. It may be the same lake and it may not, but why not use pics from the same damn locations to show the difference.

The big reservoirs are run by the federal BLM. What specifically are you referring to?

Lake Travis was also “almost dry” a few years ago, fine now

Complete and total lack of investment in additional reservoirs to support its population and agricultural needs, along with a rejection of/opposition to desalination. In short, California has chosen to appease the environmental lobby and feel good rather than pragmatically plan for its future resource needs.
