The war was about wanting to leave the union and the slaves were just a variable in that equation.
Lincoln only freed them to attack the south's agrarian economy and cripple them and it worked.

No. The ability to own slaves was the overwhelming motive for leaving the Union- read the declarations of secession from various states.

Trivia: I actually drove through the LA riots. The lakers were hosting a playoff game against portland and I didn't know wtf was going on. I was young and my dad was driving. Someone tried throwing something at our car but we got out of the hot zone quickly.

Reminds me of Shelby Foote in the Civil War series.
He says he called the great-grandaughter of Bedford Forrest and tells her, " I think the Civil War produced two authentic geniuses. Your great-grandfather and Abraham Lincoln."
And she says, "you know we never did think much of Mr. Lincoln."
Shelby Foote (laughing): "Southerners are still funny about that old War."
