Republican state Sen. Blake Miguez of Baton Rouge has secured two key endorsements in his Louisiana 6th Congressional District race.

Miguez announced that the Louisiana Republican Party endorsed him April 24. That follows his endorsement from the national conservative super PAC Club for Growth last week. Club for Growth is especially important for its financial support, which can be significant.

The 6th Congressional District is an open seat after incumbent Democratic Rep. Cleo Fields didn't qualify for reelection when the state radically altered his district with a new congressional map passed last spring.

Louisiana's new map changed the 6th District from a majority Black district stretching from Baton Rouge to Shreveport to Lafayette to one that favors Republican with its new boundaries encompassing the Capital Region anchored by Baton Rouge.

Miguez had previously been endorsed by President Trump for the 5th District seat before Louisiana changed its congressional map and Miguez chose instead to run in the 6th District. Trump hasn't yet endorsed a candidate in the 6th District race.

Miguez's strongest Republican opponent in the 10-person race is likely fellow state Sen. Rick Edmonds of Baton Rouge.

Democrat Pat Forbes has secured former Gov. John Bel Edwards' endorsement, while former teacher Lindsay "Rubia" Garcia is seeking to hold on to the Louisiana Democratic Party endorsement that she won before the new map was enacted.

The Nov. 3 election is what's known as a jungle primary, which means all candidates, regardless of party, will be on the same ballot and voters can cast their ballots for any candidate regardless of the voters' party.

Not everyone is happy about this.

State Sen. Rick Edmonds said he is “disappointed,” adding that the party’s actions are similar to California Democrats and referred to the move as “good ole boy backroom deals.” Read his full statement below.

“As a pastor and conservative state senator, I am disappointed to see the actions of our state Republican Party mimic California Democrats. The Majority of the Republican State Central Committee members that live in District 6 voted to endorse me. However, after learning that I had more endorsement votes than my opponents, the state party chose to gather a select few of their executive committee who do not live in the district to decide the party’s endorsement. This is exactly why I supported legislation to close the party primaries and end the good ole boy backroom deals.”

Larry Davis said his campaign will move forward into the fall election despite the Louisiana GOP’s decision to endorse Miguez. “Voters are tired of being told who to vote for and who their leaders should be,” he said.

Why is this race going to be a jungle primary? I thought Louisiana went to closed primaries for federal legislative races.

Timing.

They canceled the prior elections due to the Callais decision. But they lost a lot of time, and open primaries are quicker (you skip the party runoff election). Otherwise, they would have run afoul of state and federal voting requirements.

Miguez is MAGA AF and doesn’t care who knows it. He’ll deliver for the district he just moved to in order to maintain an elected seat.

Is anyone else hearing about turmoil within the Louisiana Republican Party over this endorsement? I heard at least one senior staff member was fired.

I’ll take Miguez over Edmonds. Edmonds is too soft and emotional to represent Louisiana. Maybe that’s his play for the female vote?

Timing for this one, but I wouldn't be surprised if we transition back to jungle primaries.

The move never made sense. We moved to closed primaries in early 2000's only to quickly move back to jungle primaries. My opinion is that the move to closed primaries was to remove Cassidy. Now that has been accomplished look for us to go back. This is similar to how the whole congressional district 6 has played out.

As a resident of neglected NE Louisiana, I am slighted that carpetbagger Blake didn't feel like he even needed to move to OUR Congressional district before running to represent us...but felt like he had to pretend he was from Baton Rouge to run for the 6th.

Miguez is MAGA AF

Genuine question: are any of the non-Carpetbagger candidates also MAGA AF?

I’m just glad he finally figured out what he wanted to be when he grew up.
