I think this is more about busting up the narrative that there is something untoward about an incoming administration having talks with foreign diplomats.
Dems, after years of trying to improve relations with Russia, have suddenly declared Russia the enemy and in doing so are trying to convince america that any communications with them are evil. When instances of dems meeting with Russia are pointed out, libs play dumb. See pelosis retarded excuse when she was busted meeting with the ambassador from Russia.
