The leap in logic he makes is trying to specifically tie the assets to January 6 specifically. We know that the feds had a large presence in the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys groups for a long time prior to J6, for instance. The fact that they had assets in the groups and snitches from the groups does not imply they had a role in planning J6.

Only for the event of January 6, which had no upside and clearly a lot of downside.
Admitting that worthless virtue signaling in large groups isn't worth the risk posed isn't arguing for "perpetual inaction". It's arguing for rationality over emotional needs and the risks of emotionality.
