2 possibilities I see:
1. If it was in an inconspicuous location they might have figured nobody would pay much attention to it and they would throwing it away thinking it was trash, knowing that destroying the evidence themselves would be incriminating.
2. The US government being bloated and disorganized, they all thought someone else would do it.

I do believe they found "something". I do not believe it was found in a "secret burn room", nor do I believe it was just found recently. The lie in the headline is a lie by omission. There's more to the story on how the information was acquired.

They've had this since the first couple weeks of taking office. All of it. For whatever reason they're choosing to drip it out slowly. Possibly to snare more people as they run their mouths making phone calls to each other, for example. Possibly to protect a whistleblower. Possibly to keep the opposition always two days behind and preventing their organization. I have no idea. But there's more to the story.

Patel has placed himself under the gun. He must come through with the goods. Else he, himself is through. It doesn't have to lead to convictions, but if it doesn't, there better be a very clear and easily understandable reason for it.

I'll add this. I hope everything the FBI is doing is by the book. But the childish side of me won't be very upset if they are returning fire by fabricating evidence. I don't believe this is what's happening.
