China wanted a Chinese citizen living in the US with his wife and kids to return to China to face alleged criminal charges in China. Rather than go through official channels, China sent some thugs to the US to stalk and harass him and his family.
He was told by one of the 5 arrested individuals that if he returned to China and served 10 years in prison, his wife and kids would be ok.
China has at least two dozen other targets in the US who are in similar circumstances.

So what exactly is the story here? These folks were trying to intimidate Chinese Americans to return to China or else they would kill their family back in China? I assume that these "targets" were people they wanted information from.
So this wasn't a case of these people directly spying, but instead trying to force people who may have stuff they want to return to China and hand it over.
They were leaving threatening notes on doors, threatening family, etc.
Someone needs to ask about the goddamn laptop.

China must be getting something out of this. They just dodged a question on exactly this. Question was why did China want them so badly to conduct an illegal operation to get them to return to China. Dude refused to answer.
