Why do we put that requirement on the police that they have to go through extreme circumstances to not kill these people and needlessly put their own lives at risk? Why not just say if a person isn't a POS they will not try to kill others with a knife. So when they get shot by a cop we can be sensible and say they fricked up and not the cop. Why try so hard to defend murderers and rapists but demonize the one group of people that takes it as their job to defend the rest of us from these murderers?

We're just speculating at this point since no one has seen the body cam footage. The footage might reveal that she deserved to be shot and was a threat. It might reveal something entirely different.

People who make “shoot them in the leg” posts don’t deserve responses. If you want to argue trying other means of dealing with the situation before a gun then fine but once its determined the use of a gun is necessary then center of mass is the only option. At that point, target survival is secondary to neutralization.

The appropriate response to deadly force is deadly force.

It's not required, but it is usually justified.

It depends on what's available, of course, but the normal escalation is (assuming all are available):

Hands, baton/chemical (this is circumstantial), taser, firearm

There are a variety of holds that were common and have been banned now ("chokeholds" in particular) which took a tool out of law enforcement's toolbox and they ultimately replaced with chemicals and taser. Of course neither of those are without risk.

Yet another problem with poorly trained officers who lack confidence, they go to the chemical/taser too early and it's a problem.

Hands/feet can get a cop crucified (Chauvin)

Batons can get cops crucified (Rodney King)

Chemicals/Tasers obviously can and firearms are the biggie, but the common element in most of these (I'm excluding Philando Castile, that was a terrible shoot) the perp is actively resisting arrest (including Floyd, Walter Scott, King, etc.) at some point during the encounter. Walter Scott is a terrible fact pattern, and Rodney King was a terrible case overall, but when the perp is unarmed, it isn't as simple as the cops executing them, gangland style. The criminal fricks up and then the cop fricks up at some point.

These are largely avoidable tragedies - avoidable by the deceased. I'm 100% serious.

Now you've gone Full fricking Retard. I'm a straight badass with a pistol, even by cop standards, but that's against paper targets. Throw in the adrenaline dump of a deadly force encounter, the sweaty hands, sweat pouring into your eyes, bladder voiding itself (no, that's not cowardice. It's a natural part of the human fight or flight response and is simply the body deciding which functions are necessary and which are not.....the holding of urine in the bladder being unnecessary to immediate survival) and you're likely not hitting a 5-inch wide leg with a pistol. That's why we shoot center mass.

Fair enough.

What if she's 35 feet away then?

Well, we can absolutely agree on this point.

What if she dropped the knife as I’m sure she was commanded to? It goes both ways.

Yeah, what if she has a knife and he has a gun, but she's so far away she's out of the range of his gun, but he shoots and kills her anyway, even though he couldn't shoot and kill her and she only had a knife?

What then?

We'll find out when the footage is released.

But if the officer's life wasn't in danger he'll be facing charges.
