I live in a region where there is no competition, competition with ISPs would literally improve peoples lives out here. Point to point internet cannot get here soon enough.

He thinks that wireless technology is going to change the dynamics of the internet so much that it will end cronyism and take care of every other facet of the subject at the same time. It's a pretty simplistic view, but he'll tell you that it's such a simplistic issue.

As awesome as an improvement in wireless will be a hard wired connection will always have a more stable connection.

Now the two can definitely work together like they do in Korea. Where everyone has a great wired connection at home and when they are out in about the city, they are constantly connected to a wireless solution.
I make no predictions about the specifics of future markets. Only that markets are amazing when allowed to function.
If you'd asked me in 2005 if Blockbuster was a monopoly, I would have laughed at you. But, if you followed that up with, "oh yeah, then how are they going to be replaced", I would have had no specifics. It was just obvious they were in trouble.
If you would have talked to me in 1990 about how Sears could be competed with as they were controlling malls with their big box power, I couldn't have given you specifics.
But, I would have still been correct in laughing at the idea that the govt needed to get involved.
THAT is my point.

quote:Sigh. Economics applies.........always
Great, but wild guess that it had nothing to do with running a data center.
quote:Gamble on tech changing? Gamble? It's a sure bet.
Of course technology changes - but is that something we should gamble on?
quote:Economics applies. Always.
That "everything will be a-okay" because something is SURE to come along?

The thread is about wireless making the whole thing a moot point, and I'm pointing out that we're a long way off from that being the case.

I think.........nay, I know that economics applies always.

And the circle goes round and round, how much spectrum is avalable and who controls it?
There is no free market as it is already perverted by fedgov.
The roadblocks to entry in this market were set up decades ago.

Contemplate that as you support NN.

My support for it last only as long as the monopolies stand, I am a open pipe proponent and see no need for NN were that (actual free market) to happen.

Look. I know I'm climbing uphill here folks. But really. I ask you guys to take a few moments to research arguments in the past over companies that were supposed to be impossible to compete with.
When you look back at those arguments, the people on the "they are too big" side literally look dumb 100% of the time.
With the gift of hindsight, you are able to see what they refused to even consider.
You seem a willing person. Play devil's advocate with yourself. Do as I asked.

If you are unable to comprehend the difference between blockbuster and AT&T there is no reasoning with you.
Being the retailer of choice is quite different than having sole use of a wire into every home in the USA with laws preventing others from doing the same.
Even if 5g takes hold it will be a decade before it reaches most and will never service all.
This is the free market issue not NN

I'm no fan of regulation, but it has not always been a negative, like Child Labor Laws and workplace safety laws.
