it makes sense. FBI are generally great witnesses at trial, who the frick knows what Rick gates is going to sound like? And he inherently has a credibility problem.
If you feel that the jury liked your other witnesses and you have put check-marks on all the elements of the charged offenses, a prosecutor might well think “Why present a problematic witness and subject him to cross?”

Mueller is about to go 0 for 14. Just proves that the only thing they had was threats, and that's it.
Ashamed that this entire charade has cost American taxpayers millions of dollars.

Mueller is scared to have Gates cross examined.

I'm sure they'll be sweating it a bit. Gates has been with Manafort since internship, so they both know where the others' bodies are buried.

Yeah, I would imagine that Mueller doesn't want Gates to spill everything that he has told them, which is a liability for future prosecutions.
I suspect the judge will slap the defense a few times during gates testimony. I somehow doubt that the fine netizens of td.com will start threads on it.

I don't really think its worth a thread tbh.
But well there have been like 10 on the judge's comments yesterday.

If proven usually about 2-3 years. It depends if the bank had a problem with it . If he was paying on the loan, the bank probably has no opinion on the sentence...... the government does their due diligence on this post conviction and before the sentencing phase
It may be hard to prove the bank fraud case. Either Manafort had he reserves and assets to qualify or he did not. Mueller is saying he ratholed 60 million . The bank fraud is really based on the opinion of one underwriter who wrote an email saying he thought the P & L looked "corrected"

This was started as an investigation into Russian collusion
As proven by what we've seen the last few months, the law doesn't really matter, so the circus will continue for a while.
Public rallies need to be held to squash this, just like the pussyhat festival after the election.

Will check but believe there were 3 lenders, 4 counts of bank fraud, 5 counts of bank fraud conspiracy.

Prosecutors are also formally arguing to Judge TS Ellis that they should be able to show proof to the jury of Paul Manafort’s lavish lifestyle, including photos of his high-end custom jacket, his real estate expenditures, and other purchases.
Judge Ellis has so far stopped the prosecutors from showing photos of Mr Manafort’s luxury purchases to the jury. The defense has wanted them kept out of the trial too. Mr Ellis has reminded the lawyers and Northern Virginia jurors multiple times that it’s not a crime for a person to be rich.
But in a filing, prosecutors wrote:
“That Manafort had an expensive lifestyle that required lots of money to maintain is important proof as to why he would commit the bank frauds” after his lobbying work declined in 2014.

Judge TS Ellis has brought up one of the elephants in the room — whether Mr Manafort himself will testify.
Mr Ellis said he did not yet know if Mr Manafort would testify in his own defense, and did not want to force a decision from the defense team until they begin their side of the case, after the prosecution's case rests.
“He will not be penalized for the right to remain silent,” Mr Ellis said.

There has also been some early talk of witnesses for later in the trial.
After suggesting yesterday that their potential star witness, Mr Manafort's former associate Rick Gates, may not take the stand, the prosecution have clarified they do intend to call him.
Mr Gates would take the stand - possibly as early as Friday - prosecutor Greg Andres said in court without the jury in the room.

The prosecution are still laying out their case - with today expected to a case of the US attorneys asking the jurors to "follow the money trail" of Mr Manafort's political work in Ukraine.
